Self-Study AP

Hello all, I attend a high school where AP courses are no longer offered. However, I was given the option to take the AP Exams for World History and Biology.
I believe our valedictorian for the Class of 2013 did so.
Would it even be possible to hope to achieve a 4 or 5 through this?
I am taking the respective NYS Regents courses (Global History and Living Environment/Biology).
If it is doable, what books should I get? Textbooks or review books?
I am looking for the most concise way to a grade. Extra background knowledge isn't necessary.
Thanks!
