Self-Study AP's

Hello guys,

I'm taking 3 AP's this year (Senior - Bio,US Govt, and Eng Lit), but I've been contemplating about self-studying for the AP US History exam this May.

If I self-study for it, can I indicate this on my college application? Thanks.

You can mention it, but it won't mean anything.

If I want to self-study a few APs, when do I sign up? How do I go about doing this? (I am referring to APs that my school DOES NOT offer)

bump.......

I think mentioning a self studied AP does mean something. It shows the school that you are a serious and able student who challenges himself deliberately.

how could it possibly not mean anytihng?

APUSH would be really hard to self-study. I got a 5 on the test, but 95% of my homework last year (and I was taking two other APs, three honors classes, including calc, and auditing orchestra) was for APUSH, and the class had a 60% dropout rate. We were expected to write about 15 small (1000-2500 word) essays, had three Blue Book exams (time, AP-style essays), tests on old AP questions, tests with 20 or so mini-eesays (500 words) in 45 minutes, 3 formal debates, class presentations, and a 15000 word research paper. We had about 2-3 hours a night (and about a night a week where the assignment had me up until 3AM), and about 5-7 hours on weekends, more during the reseach paper. Still, the class averaged a 4.5, and the teacher taught the class harder than his graduate class.

You could do decently without quite as much work, but I'd say self-studying a history is NOT a good idea. You're much better with something like APES (didn't learn a thing all year and I still got a 5).

"killaerone:If I want to self-study a few APs, when do I sign up? How do I go about doing this? (I am referring to APs that my school DOES NOT offer)"

That is what I am wondering to how do you go about singing up for them? Do you just wait untill the sign up time begins? Or do you have to talk to a guidance counslor, teacher, etc..

Thanks in Advanced

"how could it possibly not mean anytihng?"

Because if you do it senior year they won't have any proof. Now if you successfully did it junior year then they would probably consider it, but not to the extent that some people here tend to think (self studying sixteen APs is going to get me into Harvard!!!1111)

so if i were to self study around 4 my junior because I am not taking any APs in school, then it would look ok? And I am going to take 2 APs for senior year.....My school only offers 6 APs and one is art, which is wayyyy out of the question for me :).

for senior year, i mean take 2 APs from my school
