Is it self-study-able? What books would you recommend? English/writing is my relative strength and I am willing to work hard.

Thanks!

Well, there's nothing really to "study" persay. It's all about practicing writing essays and reading passages. Even if English is your strengh, I don't personally recommend self-studying, as it would be wise for your essays to graded by a teacher using the 0-9 rubric so that you know where you stand. If you self-study, you may improperly evaluate your writing level. The reading passages can be self-studied, though, but that doesn't really help on account of you can't self-study half of a course. I got a 3, and I consider English my weakest subject. So if you take the class you should definitely be able to pass since English is your strength. Plus, since English is a required course at all high schools anyway, why not take it?

You can definitely self-study the AP English Language exam. I got a 5, but you do not even need the class to attain it. I barely did any work in my AP English Language class this year, yet I managed a 5 on the exam. Surely, my class grades would not reflect my exam grade. However, I attribute my 5 to being strong in English, both in Reading and Writing. Thus, if you consider English your strength, I highly suggest you take the exam. You do not need any textbooks. In a sense, if you have been learning English since childhood, you have really been preparing for the AP English Language exam since grade school.

Hm, okay. Well I have various reasons for wanting to take Lang self-study...
1. It's not offered at our school, which means it'd HAVE to be self-study anyways
2. I'm taking Lit, so if I'm reading the books for that it might help me with Lang too
3. (It's not a very good reason) As things stand now, I'm 1 class away from having 8 APs...and I haven't ruined my chances for being Nat'l AP scholar yet and I think I could handle it

Of course I would talk to my English teacher throughout the year and meet with her.

i got a 4 on the exam.... i never prepped for the exam outside of class, you just have to learn how to analyze texts and basically understand the author.

Lit and Lang are different in focus. Lang is about argumentation/rhetoric and Lit is more analysis (poetry, etc.) In both you have to argue your points in your essays so they should help each other, but if you get some outside material to look at the writing style (many on CC like Cliffs), it should help.

I self-studied AP Eng. Lang. Pay attention in your english class and write a solid 5 paragraph essay. I used the Barrons book and read its tips the night before. I never even did its practice tests or anything. It's not worth it. U could prlly do well by just concentrating on the passages in the MC and looking at sample essays. Good Luck, <3.

You absolutely can do well in lang without a class. The MC is easier on lang than the SAT CR. Just practice writing quick, solid arguments and you're just about all set. But don't forget to go over the analysis essay...

yeah as long as you're naturally gifted at english, you'll do fine. i self-studied and just got a 5 after taking only one practice test in my book (i used the kaplan book, and the test was far more difficult than the actual exam, so you may want to try using that one). the only thing i would recommend doing is going over some of the more obscure literary terms, but otherwise it's all a matter of your analytical and persuasive skills. good luck!

Wow, thank you everyone!

Another advantage for me is that no one takes APs are our school, so they pay for all tests. I'll remember to sign up for it and start gathering my materials.

And I'll be sure to look here on CC if I need help.

Thanks again! =)
