Self Study for AP American?

I'd like to AP American. Do you guys recommend me doing so? I really like history. What textbook and review book is best?

I think it'll be tough, because history is best learned through discussions, lectures, and essays, IMO. It's a class I definitely wouldn't want to have missed. But self studying for the AP can be done. I don't know on text books, but definitely get the AMSCO review books. It's amazing. It's very thick, and probably could almost serve as a textbook itself, but it has everything you'll need to know for the exam and lots of helpful practice stuff.

barrons is good. Kaplan though, has a great definition type format perfect for m. choice. I did it and got a 5 and 800 so it takes time, but is feasible

If you want a very thorough textbook, i recommend The American Pageant, which was our school textbook. Its very complete and probably has 99 percent of what you'll need to know. If you don't have time for that, some of the prep books listed above you should get.

It won't be completely independent study. I'm taking honors american history this year and next year and I currently have a teacher who is widely known (contributed to CAHO) and is a great and interesting one. There's lots of discussions and essay writing (I hope I get him again as teacher next year); it's why I even thought of taking the AP american exam in the first place.

should be no problem.

our apus history class didnt do much the whole year. i read the whole pr book the day before the test(i skipped school) and am optimistic for 5, though I could get a 4.

If you have time, barrons is a great supplement because it has a lot of sample essay responses in the book. if you just want to learn straight facts along with general trends i suggest princeton review. its really good.

If you're taking an honors class, preparing for the AP isn't impossible. The best review book I've found (and many agree with me on this) is REA. It covers everything and is in a good format for both quick review and easy study.
