Is anyone else trying to gain proficiency in a foreign language that you don't take or is not offered in your school?

I'll start: I'm self-studying Japanese.

How do you plan to do it? Rosetta Stone?

I'm self-studying Japanese, too.
I don't have the time to take it as a class at some cram school, so I'll have to stick with self-teaching. It's pretty time-consuming though....

Self-studying Italian. Do you think this will help in the admissions process? Or would you need some kind of proof that you're proficient?

JteH:
I bought a textbook called Adventures in Japanese and its corresponding workbook; Rosetta Stone costs a lot and I don't have the discipline to study on the computer.

I think that studying Italian will help because it shows that you are motivated and disciplined because self-studying anything is hard, in my opinion. As for proof, I don't know how you are going to show it (unless you speak to the Italian instructor at your prospective schools) since the AP Italian test will get cut from the AP program in 2009. As for me, I am hoping that I will be confident enough in my ability to get a good score on the SAT 2 Japanese test at the beginning of my junior or senior year. Unfortunately, there is no SAT 2 test for Italian.

Im self studying Arabic. Still trying to master the alphabet though

Actually, there is a SAT2 in Italian, offered only in December. There is, however, no listening SAT 2 for Italian. I don't know if the College Board's decision to drop AP Italian from the mix will ultimately mean that they drop the SAT II in Italian, but it is definitely on the schedule for December 2008.

wow you guys are amazing... self-studying a language... honestly a lot of my friends tried self-studying but it never worked out for them because you need to be in an environment where the language is constantly spoken. there are those select few who are able to learn a language just from pure study and self-practice but this is college confidential so i am sure you guys are the select few haha. anyways enough about my rant. the only "studying" i do is just read some korean a lil daily just so i dont forget it. luckily i converse in korean with my parents. good luck on your studying!!
