I'm a junior in high school and was wondering if it was possible to self study AP English Lang. and get a 4. I have a pretty good English background and scored a 790 and 11 on the SAT Critical Reading and Essay portions, respectively. I took a practice English Language multiple choice test and got around 70 percent. I now have around a month left. TY

I’d say it’s very possible. That class isnt really any content, you’d probably just have to learn some of the vocab words and familiarize yourself with the essays. My teacher said that if you can get around a 60% on the multiple choice and do OK on the essays you’re in good shape to get a 3. So, 70% seems to be right around there for a 4 I think. If you do really well on the essays and get a 70% or so I’d say you probably get a 5. However, I dont know if you can still sign up if you already havent…

I signed up for the exam so that’s not a problem. Thanks for your response.

Well for the reading part you have lots of room for improvement considering your score. But the AP Lang’s essay section cannot be entirely related to the SATI’s essay. The essays for AP Lang are synthesis (using sources), argumentative w/o sources, and rhetoric.
If you’re in any AP history classes, this should be no problem. It’s basically looking through sources and using them to back up your arguments.
The argumentative w/o sources is the one that’s like the SAT, so it’s not a big deal.
The rhetoric may be the one where you may have trouble. You read a passage and then write about HOW the author writes in order to do something. For example, write about the methods blah blah uses to persuade blah blah.

AP Lang isn’t that hard. Half of the test is subjective. And your reading is pretty good already. I would suggest that you just study rhetorical strategies and keep taking practice tests.
