So I consider myself a pretty ambitious student and have always wanted to learn Latin. My curiosity was halted after discovering my school didn't offer Latin. As I'm about to entire my senior year I'm wondering whether is it possible that, within a year of rigorous (3-4+ hours) studying, I can do well and be prepared for the AP Latin exam?

To be perfectly honest, No. I am a fourth year latin student and can tell you that you will not have an adequate understanding of the language and the required translated work (Vergil’s Aeneid) to be able to take the exam. I have mentioned to my fellow Latin 4 students about people thinking of self-studying and they burst out laughing. It is just not a good idea at all. Even after 4 years of the language I do not think I know it well enough to do well on the AP test. It is a hard test and a hard language. Even if you are very ambitious (I am also), I would advise very very much so against it. If you have any more questions about it you can PM me… but I would say no.

Thanks Salve. An honest response was what I was looking for and I’m glad you have the experience to offer me that. Latin is a language I really want to learn so regardless of whether I’ll be competent enough to take the exam at the end of the year I’m probably still going to work hard at learning the language. Thanks dude.

Definitely still learn it if you want to. It might be a hard language, but it is also fun if you spend time with it. Make sure to study Roman culture and customs while you are learning it. Also, expose yourself to numerous different writers because that will really help in comprehension. Good Luck man!
