I hear a lot about self-studying APs which I might do on some of them. My concern is, how do you get it on your college transcript? Would you tell your high school or would you tell your college? Some people even just self-study APs so that it would look good on a college transcript, but I have a fear that it doesn’t appear. How does the process work? I tried searching the Internet, but I cannot find a single question or article about it – I only see articles about advantages and disadvantages.
Thanks!
You have to be admitted to a college that will accept your scores for credit. How it will appear will depend upon the college. Self studied courses in most cases will not appear on a HS transcript.
I think what you are asking is how will colleges treat self-studied AP scores for the purposes of giving you credit for courses? What happens is this - once you are admitted and pick the college you plan on attending - you submit your AP Test Scores to the Registrar and a determination is made based on each college’s or each department’s policies on how much credit will be awarded. What the college will care about will be your score on the AP Exam not whether you actually took the class in high school or not. How this all unfolds will utlimately depend on your college major and what AP Exams you’ve taken. D went through this at Notre Dame this fall. She came in with 11 AP Exams and about half of them were accepted by Notre Dame for credit. In some cases, for example a 5 on the Calculus BC exam, credit for more than one class is awarded. Generally speaking a flagship public university will be more liberal with awarding credit for AP courses
Thanks for the answers. I’m still a bit unclear. Just to make things clear, I’m not asking about AP exam score credit, as in whether or not the college allows you to skip the college course. I mean AP course on the transcript You get credit for it but likely no GPA?
I have an older kid who self studied 3 exams. You do not get credit from your high school for a self study course. He noted it on his Common App. The scores get reported to the colleges from College Board.
