AP Comp sci is just...different. If you don't know java, it's hard at first. But once you get the hang of it, the subject is okay. But I would suggest you take the class because you need some guidance in addition to what textbooks say in writing programs.

This is a great post. :)

I have a few questions for oasis or anyone else who knows the answer:

-My school offers no AP Classes. :( So I am planning on self-studying. :)

I'm hoping to take my first tests this Spring. I've heard a little about the registration process from college board. But any information about this would be appreciated too.

I'm specifically wondering how the score-sending process works? I'm not a senior, so I know scores should go to my high school.

-Do they get sent directly to my school's director?
-Will I get a copy in the mail too?
-When I apply to colleges, where/how do I note that I self-studied and the scores?

Thanks, any help is greatly appreciated. :)

If your transcript shows no AP level courses, and you have AP test scores, it will reflect the self-studying. You could include it in one of your essay responses though?

AP scores are sent to teachers first, I believe. You will get a copy in the mail as well, and it'll most likely be online?

Has anyone self studied for Latin? I haven't taken Latin for a year and a half, but I was a solid student for 3 years, straight A's. Is Vergil or Catullus easier? And if Catullus, then with Ovid, Horace, or Cicero. I have a Latin book, but it's just for funsies, so which textbook would be best?

thx.. is AP Language easy to study online?

Hi. I am a junior in Taipie Municipal First Girls, a non-international school in Taiwan.

I just received a letter from EGPY. I've self-learned Calculus for a year, and I really want to take calculus courses at EGPY. But my school is not an international school and so doesn't offer AP exams. If I take calculus at EGPY, is that possible that I can take AP exams elsewhere? And when?

By the way, does anyone ever take courses at EGPY? How do you feel about the it?

It is my first time to post questions. Thanks anyone who answer my questions!

I've already taken the World History and European History AP exams, self-studied and scored 5s on both (old school did not offer APS.) However, I want to take AP European History as a class senior year because I think I can actually learn something from it (especially after taking AP Micro & Macro, same teacher) and because I think it'll build rapport with the teacher I can parlay into a strong recommendation letter.

Would this look bad on a resume though? Taking the class after the AP looks sort of weird, and I think it might diminish the positive appearance of having self-studied for the test. Thoughts?

Hi! I am a currently a junior, and this is the first year my school offers AP classes. I am taking AP Gov and APUSH. I am also taking Adv. Chem, which is probably the same AP level but not an AP course. Last year, I took Honors World History. I am considering self-studying AP Econ, AP World History (are there DBQs/ FRQs on this?), AP Stat, and maybe AP Geo. What do you think? Should I take the AP Chem test too?

Hey. I study in India and my school is a center for AP examinations
My plan is to attend college in America.
Excluding the SAT 1 and SAT 2, I have heard a good load about AP
AP test prep books are readily available here.]
Is it worth self stuying AP sciences?
Thank you!

Ivybound - my d is taking AP French online. She doesn't find it too difficult.

All AP tests are in May.

AP Calendar ?AP Exam Dates

The original poster of this thread took his AP tests in Taiwan. It should be possible for you to make arrangements to take the test at another high school, as long as you can leave 北一女 long enough to go elsewhere to take the test. (There may be some local regulation that keeps you from taking the tests, but I don't think so.)

Please ask follow-up questions as needed. Good luck in arranging the tests.

I am a freshman at a highly uncompetetive high school in New Jersey. Right now my course schedule is rather light (lets just say i have time to sit looking through the cc forums for hours on end) and I was wondering; what, if any, AP tests would be feasible for me to take? I am interested in Environmental Science, Psychology, European History, US Gov/ Comparative US Gov (which one would I take first?) and possibly macroeconomics. I am very self-motivated and have, in my opinion, enough spare time to self study an AP subject. I wouldn't want to take AP World or APUSH because the history teacher at my high school is great, but those are the only histories offered. Any recommendations?

scrivener- I would recommend starting to self-study some of the "easier" AP classes, especially if you are a freshman. I'd recommend Environmental Science and/or Psychology. Both seem to be pretty easily self-studied (lots of memorization, not too much stuff that needs to be taught in a classroom). European History is fascinating but definitely much more challenging. US Gov/ Comparative US Gov (doesn't really matter which order IMO) are best taken in conjunction with or after APUSH I think, because a lot of the information comes in direct correlation to US History. If you have any more questions on these, you can PM me because I'm taking several of these now. :) Good Luck!

How hard would it be to self-study Environmental Science without taking AP Biology? I'm a current junior not sure whether to do that one or Psychology. I wouldn't want to take both, as it is already pushing it to ask my school to let me take even one without the class.

@ lsts: I'm taking AP Psychology and I've noticed that on a lot of websites, including College Board and the ACT test site, that Psychology is listed under social sciences. From what I'm learning, it is really more social stuff than biology, so it might be easier for you to grasp. It's a lot of theory about behavior and social interactions and some development stuff. The only major topic that you might have difficulty on is the one about neurons and how messages are sent, but just read about it from various sources and you should be fine. If you do self-study for this, I recommend Barron's review book; it seems to summarize my textbook pretty well.

My school offers a large number of AP courses - I took 3 during sophomore year (Calc AB, Bio, Gov), I'm taking 5 right now (Physics Mechanics, World History, Calc C, English Lang, Chem), and I've signed up for 5 additional courses for senior year (Euro, English Lit, Physics E&M, Psych, Spanish). Do you think its a good idea to try and self-study 1 or 2 more courses this year, even though I'll have 13 done by the time I've graduated? Some of my teachers have told me to take AS MANY as possible, but I'm not sure how much 1 or 2 more courses would matter at this point. Even without any extra classes I'll probably have enough to become a National AP Scholar. What do you think?

Sure. Take both Macro and Micro this year.

Environmental Science as a breeze for senior year.

Aww mann...

There are so many overachievers in this place.

Now I'm regretting that I only signed up for 4 APs and 1 IB for junior year.

Ugh. Cuz right now I have .. 1 AP course in sophomore which seems like nothing, and maybe self-studying 2... That means 3 in sophomore year...

4 + 1 IB + 2 self studies = 7 "APs" = 10 by junior year.

And another 5 in senior. Though...maybe I should take AP US Gov? It might be quite interesting. xD.

Ahh well. If I do that...well I have no idea.

Oh well it doesn't matter.

Though I'm somewhat interested in

@potentenum - looks like you and I are quite similar in terms of AP/IBs. I would say that your AP schedule is perfectly fine.

The only one I took as a sophomore was World History.

I'm going to sign up for 5 this year (junior year). Calculus BC, Human Geography, and Spanish Language are the three classes I'm currently taking. I'm also going to self study Statistics, and take the US History exam (I'm not taking APUSH, I'm taking IB History of the Americas, but it's close enough). And I also have my IB Geography SL exam this year.

Senior year I'm looking at 5 IB exams - English HL, Physics HL, Math HL, History HL and Spanish SL. I'm also weighing my AP options right now - I could possibly take English Language, Physics C, Chemistry, Environmental Science, or others.

I'm not sure right now.

Dear oasis i think i am going to apply for an ap biology exam. can you tell me how much does it take to study a book such as cliffnotes? and please tell me about some basic ways of memorizing the bast amounts of information
