I don’t know how easy self studying computer science would be.

Junior year I took but one AP (US History) and received a 3, due to the fact that I paid little attention to the class and studied 2 nights before and had to work the actual night before the test. Meh.

I’m going to be a senior this year and I’m scheduled to take 3 APs: Stats, Physics B, Lit.

Do you think it would be a waste of time to self study Psych and Environmental Science? I wasn’t aware that you could self study until the end of my Junior year, but will colleges even see or care that I am self studying?

If you’re going to be a senior most likely they will not see. But it’s a good idea because you’ll earn some credit. You shouldn’t do everything you do just to impress an admissions committee.

That’s true. I am actually interested in Psychology and ES but my school doesn’t offer AP courses of them, so I will probably end up self studying them anyway :D.

I’m sorry if this has been asked before, but which text books would be best for self-studying Biology, Environmental Science, Psychology, and World History?

I would love to add that this thread can also be useful for the people with crappy teachers. If your AP Psych teacher sucks, you can come here to see ways to make up for that by yourself.

Which books would you recommend for AP Human Geography and AP Macro and Micro Economics. It seems like 5 steps to a 5 is good for Econ but I’m not sure about APHG

PR all the way for APHG

I am rising senior and I am contemplating self studying AP Psych.

Can anyone tell me what the benefits are short term and long term in self studying AP Psych as a senior and taking the AP exam at the end of senior year? Such as, can I put it on my app? Will it significantly help me in college in terms of advancing in certain majors (such as pre-med, biology, physics, etc)?

Any help is much appreciated.

As a senior, it likely won’t impact your university’s admission decision at all. Then you will have to check on the university that you would like to attend’s website. Almost all universities will grant credit or advanced standing for exam scores above a 3.

Did you take all 14 AP’s in one year or did you spread it out. My school placed a cap on when you can take an AP, and how many you can take. For my school, American School of Dubai, you can only take 8 AP’s (4 in junior year and 4 in senior year). Either way I have to self learn the AP’s I want to do, because they are not offered. Also, where would a student outside of the USA (I’m in the UAE borders Saudi Arabia). Thanks for your detailed post.

I am not sure if the opening post is still up to date. So, could someone confirm that it is, or clarify what the best books to self-study: AP Macro+Micro Economics, APUSH, AP French, AP US Govt, AP Stats, AP Chemistry? I do not plan to take all of these, but I’m definitely picking a couple from these six depending on factors like the availability of self-study material.

Right now, I have the Barron’s books for these subjects but just want to make sure that there isn’t any better book I should be using.

US - AMSCO + Crash Course
Gov - PR
Econ - 5 Steps

Excuse me, I wander what is your so-called Atakins??
Sorry for this naive question…
But hope you can give me an answer.

^ you wander?

Hey everyone!

This is my schedule for junior year (all class courses):
AP Calc BC
AP English
AP Chem
AP Environmental
AP German
AP US History
Newspaper

The idea of self study is really appealing, and I think I would really benefit from doing such a thing.

Are AP Psych and AP Euro (both self-study) doable with this schedule?

Also do you think taking AP Computer Sci A online is a good idea?

^ I would like to know if taking Computer Science A online is a good idea as well. I have very little background with java and computer science. Is this doable, if I have a rather rigorous schedule next year?

^ I would be interested in taking it online as well. Any suggestions? And @ Thuglyfe, you’re schedule seems insanely rigorous. I hope my junior year’s schedule is as awesome as yours.

Personally, I think it would make the most sense to take AP Computer Sci A as an online class. Trust me, I have like no knowledge of java or any of that. I think it’ll be fun learning that type of stuff. Do you know where you would take it? North Carolina has like a virtual public school thing.

^I’ve heard of Kaplan doing something of the sort. Do you go to a magnet school?
