Self-Studying APs: Improving Your App

The only thing I’m worried about when it comes to taking online AP Computer Science next year is that I’ve checked out some AP CS prep books and they look insanely intimidating. I’m afraid I won’t understand a thing when the school year starts, especially without the aid of friends (since I’m the only one I know that’s considering this course at my school) and a face-to-face classroom setting.

That’s true, but there’s always the internet. Personally, I think it’s worth the challenge. Plus if you have it online, you have an incentive to keep up with your assignments and grades. You’ll have an online teacher, who’s bound to help unless she’s a complete dip**** (past experiences :P).

GAH, I’m so torn about this whole thing. One part of me really wants to amp it up and go for it, but the other part of me worries about how an extra AP might affect my SAT, 6 other APs, social life, sports, etc.

@dylandlima: Yeah, I attend a magnet school.

^ Because my cousin practically gave up her social life during her junior year (she quit texting and deleted her facebook account), she got 5’s on six AP exams and 2330 on the SAT. Giving up your social life for awhile isn’t a bad thing.

Yeah it is worth it to give up your social life. And you go to a magnet school, which means most of your classmates have already given up their social lives. God I want to go to a magnet so badly…I go to one of the worst public schools in Texas…It was even labeled a dropout factory by the associated press. schools[/url”>http://hosted.ap.org/specials/interactives/wdc/dropout/index.html?SITE=AP]schools <-That’s the article, my high school is a dropout factory. Check if yours is. But CC users’ schools are usually magnet and highly competitive so probably not too many people here go to a dropout factory.

I may give up my social life before I take the ACT again and before I take next year’s AP tests. :slight_smile: It’s not such a bad thing.

I’m going to take the SAT or ACT (haven’t quite decided) as a sophomore once with no prep…I’m going to hope for at least 1800 combined.

@dylanandlima: You’re a sophomore?!?!? Why are you even thinking of taking APComp?

Yeah, SAT prep is like my life right now. But it’s so worth it. My diagnostic was a 1800, but I’ve improved a lot, and I think this rigorous schedule is a good way to get ready for school.

I gave up my facebook completely last year. It wasn’t bad at all. In fact I think it actually strengthened some friendships, the ones that really mattered. :P

@Thuglyfe: Yes I will be a sophomore next year (14 years old). I took APHG last year and had a positive experience, aside from that I am extremely ambitious. And yes I too will deactivate my Facebook account for the school year. Too much time wasted there. I want to get at least 4 AP Exams done next year so I can be at least an AP Scholar with a distinction.

Which three besides APCompsci are you taking?

Well, I will be in APWH, AP Biology, and AP Spanish Language. But I may not take the Spanish Language exam, undecided on that. I plan to maybe self study Psychology and Comp. But I don’t have confirmation on whether or not my school will proctor. They won’t return my emails. Ugh!

Hey guys. Is it necessary to take notes from prep books while self-studying the following subjects? : Psych, APHG, Macro/Micro econ

I have BArron’s for psych, PR for APHG, and 5 steps for Macro/micro. is it necessary to take notes aside from these prep books, or will just reading the prep books be sufficient?

thanks!

^ In addition to prep books, I would watch lectures on youtube for economics. I can’t find the link right now, but it’s in the thread somewhere.

So, really, notes aren’t necessary for self studying? Thanks for your input, by the way.

@ Mycoalwin: I don’t know, I guess it depends on the type of learner you are. I’m extremely visual so it helps if I take notes. I think lectures are a win-win because they are audio-visual. If you’re in a time crunch, just make a word doc of bullet points from the chapter that you’re reading etc. I’ve never done a self-study exam before, so idk if this advice is legit. But it works for me. :]

Are you taking those 3 with other APs? I want to do that too, except not human geography (1 history/year is enough for me), but idk if I’ll be able to manage.

@whoever self-studied for APHG…

I’m not a fan of history in general, so will I have a hard time with this?
What does the course consist of?
Can someone give me an overview?

Yeah I will, but it’s so late I can barely think straight. Will write you in the morning.

so… its better to independent study junior year than independent study senior year? (since the colleges won’t know)?

like junior yr is to make your application look good and senior year is just studying for your pleasure?

thuglyfe- I self-studied for APHG…
The course consists of many things. Population Geography, Cultural Geography, Urban Geography, Economic Geography, Political Geography, Agricultural Geography, and maybe one or two more subjects.
Overview? I studied on and off throughout the school year. That’s what I recommend doing; some people say to wait until the week before but that’s just stupid. Start in January at the latest. Human Geography is a pretty simple but interesting subject. It doesn’t matter that you’re not a fan of history, as there is little history in Human Geography. It’s more of the world’s cultures and civilizations NOW.
Hope I helped. PM if you have more questions.

^^ When did you start for APHG? I’m self studying for APES and AP Psych too, so any info about those would be appreciated too.

You can start around Spring Break. School starts in 13 days…starting to get pumped up.
