If you self study APs your school doesn’t offer how do you take the test? My school only has 2 APs and the schools around me have about the same amount. How do you put it on your application? Should your school know that you are self studying an AP?

Great post!
Do you think it’d be possible to self study AP Bio if I haven’t taken Honors Bio? (I took Honors Chem instead so I could do AP Chem this year)

Self studying is definitely worthwhile if you consider that admissions offices look at your HS career IN CONTEXT. So someone who take all 3 AP’s his school offers is looked about evenly as someone who takes all 10 his school offers in terms of effort. They consider your situation.

That said, it would look awesome if you actually self-studied and went way above and beyond. I self studied for World History and was glad I did.

As for the post before this: Yes, it’s definitely possible if you commit the time to it, get help from teachers, and put in the effort.

I am currently in grade 10 and am planning to take AP Environmental Science, AP Microeconomics, and AP Computer Science A. I was thinking whether or not to do the online course. Will I get the same amount of credit if I self-study or take the online course? Presume I am able to get a 5 on both courses if I self-study… is there any other advantage?

I am currently in 11th grade and I am taking 7 AP classes this year:
AP Biology
AP Physics B
AP Calculus BC
AP US History
AP Microeconomics
AP English Language
AP Environmental Science

I want to self study one more AP. My options are either AP comparative gov ( i have already taken AP us gov so would this be easier?), ap physics c mechanics, and/or physics c electricity and magnetism. Which would take the least time to study?

Asking a question as a freshman…

What is the point of doing an AP if you don’t have a real passion for the subject? Do you guys do this / is it very common? It just seems very shallow to me. If it’s not that hard then I see it as a good boost, but it seems like a waste to spend time in APs you won’t use in the future.

It allows you to place out of classes you will have to take anyways in college if you get the qualifying score on the ap exam. Saves money and lets you challenge yourself a little more in high school.

mrad567, i believe us com gov would take the least time as physics c is supposed to be pretty hard from what i have heard. you probably would want to take a class for physics c. did you already take macro?

Peachmarmalade: Yes, I have already taken macro. Thanks for your help! My physics teacher said that it wouldn’t be too hard to study physics c since I’m in physics b right now and I’ve taken calculus but I still haven’t decided.I’m more of a science person than a social studies person though so I think I’m learning more towards physics c, but I don’t know which one I should take (or both).

Can you tell me to self study Cal AB , Phy C Mech and CS A effectively ? I use Barron’s. Thank you.

Calc AB is not a difficult class as long as you have the right resources to study for it. There are a lot of resources on the web for calc.

Same goes for cs a, but make sure you know exactly what’s going to be tested because java is an extremely expansive programming language and the class covers a very specific subset of it.

From personal experience,I can tell you that the practice tests in Barrons are more difficult than the actual exam for both of these classes so it is a very good supplement to use.

As for physics c mechanics,I want to self study it as well. If you are also self studying calc, you will likely not have too difficult of a time studying it. However you should have good foundational knowledge of physics at the honors level or physics b level. If you self study it you will have to learn these although at that point you could probably try for the physics b exam too.

I am self-studying both Physics C exams currently and am enrolled in Physics B and Calculus BC (neither Physics C is offered as a class at my school). What do is the recommended way to study for the test (I figured I’d get a book, but which one is best?) and how early do I need to start?

I also saw several mentions of labs in the OP. Is there any lab requirement for an AP exam like there is on the Regent’s, or are the labs just for aiding in the understanding of the science?

So how does self stusying work? Do you just get a testbook and study it? I want to do some easy APs and get 5s on them. Do you guys recommend any specific classes? And do I just register for the test online and take it wherever I register or is every test available at my school?

here is my tentative AP schedule (i’m a freshman with no APs, yet)

10th:
Chem
US History
Biology (self study)
Human Geography (self study)
Environmental Science (self study)

11th:
Calculus BC
Physics B
English Language and Composition
Spanish Language
World History
European History (self-study)

12th:
English Literature
Government
Microeconomics/Macroeconomics
Spanish Literature
Statistics
Psychology
Comparative Government (self-study)
Physics C: electricity and magnetism (self-study)
Physics C: mechanics (self-study)

any thoughts ? advice?

I think you ought to take an AP or two before deciding you’re going to take and self-study for so many. S did self study for Env Sci and us govt. He keeps up on current events and found them both easy–studied the books at B&N and library for a few hours. He did take AP physics B and C in HS, which gave him an excellent foundation for engineering.

Depending on where you go for college, many Us have caps on how many credits you can bring in when you enter their U. Even tho S had far more than 60 credits, that was the max he was allowed to bring in, so the additional APs didn’t really help him.

too many APs. You won’t have time to do a lot other things you should do in HS.

Boomvoom that seems like too many. I am taking APUSH now and self studying for Gov. I am using an online class to help me stay on tack. It is from APEX Learning. It has been great so far. You can start a class any monday.

I am a senior right now and am taking a Calc AB course at school and want to self-study BC. How do you suggest I go about doing so?

Also, I took Physics B last year and got a 5 and I now am self-studying Physics C E&M. I sit in the back of the regular Physics classroom and study my own thing but I still get a grade. My class is supposedly called Honors Physics since it’s not an actual AP.

Does it look bad on my transcript that I went from AP Physics to Honors Physics although I mentioned that I plan on taking the Physics C exam?

Also, just to mention, in case it’s important:
Last year I took Physics B (5), US History (5), Chemistry (4), and English Lit (3)

And this year I’m taking:
Calc AB/BC, Physics C E&M, English Lang, and Bio.

heyy everyone i’m currently a sophomore and i’ve taken bio 1 before and ended the year with a A+ with a near 100% score. My school doesn’t offer AP bio and offers IB instead, but I want to get some APs done before 11th grade. I’m thinking of taking AP Psych, AP Environmental Science and AP bio this may. I heard AP Psych and APES are pretty easy to handle but I’m just worried about Bio. I heard things have changed and before it was the easiest science because it was only memorization but now it’s not… Would it still be okay if I self-studied for it?? I have the Cliffs Bio Notes and am planning to study hard for the next 3 months… do you think it’ll be possible to get a 5?? How hard is the test?? Thank you :)

My school offers pretty much all AP courses, including the new ones (Capstone) next year.

Because of a certain situation with my school district, juniors/CO 2015 has a lot of conflicting schedules… which is why I was considering to self-study.

I don’t think I could manage so many though, and really I am only interested in one – AP Latin: Vergil. While it is “offered” at my school, you need to complete 4 hours of Latin in order to take it (and I will have done 3 by junior year, thus making it impossible)… so I was considering doing Latin 4 and AP Latin concurrently while self-studying AP Latin… I mean, I doubt it would be that difficult if I’m disciplined about it.

I’ll have about 8-9 AP classes total IF I include self-study… I’m not certain which honors pertain to that, but I’m aiming to get at least 4s on all of them, if not 5s.

EDIT: Okay, so a few more details. Next year I’m aiming to take Eng Lit, US Gov, World History, Physics C, and Stats… but I don’t have enough space in my schedule for all of them. Is it preferable to self-study in that case?
