Self-studying APs- worthwhile boost?

Like the title says, I'm planning on self-studying 2 APs, bio and chem. My school doesn't offer these courses (international) and I've already applied to my top 8 colleges. I'm considering doing this after seeing many accepted applicants with APs. I know they say no APs aren't going to affect me if my school doesn't offer it, but I think sending them an update saying I am planning on self-studying shows some motivation, correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm hoping this may give my application a boost albeit a small one among a very competitive pool. That, and it's a good review for me before college.

What do y'all think?

Agree with almost all you say:

Nice thing to be able to tell them, shows motivation etc
BUT not gonna be a huge boost, just a good thing
BUT definitely a good review for you too…

So yeah, imo go for it if you have the time

Yeah it’s probably a good idea if your school doesn’t have any APs. It’s the kids that take like 10 AP classes in school and self-study 2 more that are wasting their time.

I think if you don’t self-study, it won’t hurt you, but if you do, it may give you a tiny bump if you’re planning on majoring in bio or chem, since you’re showing motivation to go beyond what you’re school offers. I’m confused though, how do you plan on telling the 8 colleges that you’ve already submitted apps to?

i don’t think its worth it. only do it if you plan to major in the subject.

@808drum: I’m thinking update through mail or email? Which one’s more effective/more likely to reach my file?

Doesn’t guidance send a midyear report/ update as well? I’m hoping to get my counselor to put in a word for me too.

As in you applied this year, and want to take those AP tests this year also?
I guess they may give you a bit of a bump or so, but the majority of a bump from something like that would be the 4s or 5s on an application without the student having the opportunity to take the classes, to further show initiative. Anyone could otherwise send in a comment saying they are self studying AP tests.

^ Good point, but I’m hoping they’ll have faith in my integrity.
