Self-studying AP's

Has anyone self-studied AP psychology or AP stats? Are they manageable? Not too hard in comparison to AP sciences?

AP Psychology, class or independent study, is easy. But as with AP Statistics...having never liked the subject, I can't comment.

AP stat is easy to self study if you are good at math

I find calc easier (but it's not a great idea to self study that)...

how exactly do people self study? do u just buy an ap book from barrons or something and study it?

you can get a prep book and an alternate text too, that is what im doing right now with human geography.

ryan 2288 what text are you getting for human geo?

I wouldn't self study an AP class with just a prep book.

I'd use a nice textbook in conjunction with a prep book.

i self studied calculus and got a five on the test, in a month time (Princeton Review). I imagine statistics would be a lot easier to study than that. It could be done in two weeks, easy.

I don't know about psychology or stat, but I'm self-studying other APs and it isn't too bad. Prentice Hall (publisher) has free online lesson plans for AP Pyschology (no stat, sorry); they go with one of their books, but even if you didn't use that text, they might still be useful. I'm using their lesson plans as a study guide for AP Euro and AP Bio.

Here's the website for the lesson plans: http://www.phschool.com/advanced/lesson_plans/

"ryan 2288 what text are you getting for human geo?"

HUMAN GEOGRAPHY culture, society, and space seventh edition by H.J De Blij and Alexander B. Murphy. Publisher is Wiley. I got it brand new on Amazon for like 40 dollars. It has produce on the cover with a yellow border. Me and my friend both have the book and are the only people in the school taking the exam.

tongos watch out...self-studying something like that is setting yourself up for a fall...if you learn the test instead of the material, you are not gonna like college

my mom teaches first-year calculus at Cal Poly Pomona, and she says the people who skip classes with AP credit, even 5s, do worse than the average student because they don't have solid foundations (she tells of an AP student who couldn't remember how to integrate 1/x^2)

i am in psychology right now. it is probably the easiest AP class in my opinion anyway. the essays are weird tho... or at least last year was according to my teacher. not sure about stats.

i would be careful studying for AP Bio (one of the post mentioned it). maybe it's just me but it was tough. one of the hardest AP test from what i heard.

"tongos watch out...self-studying something like that is setting yourself up for a fall...if you learn the test instead of the material, you are not gonna like college"

I studied the test for one month, i've studied calculus (and i know it pretty well too) since i was a sophomore, trust me, im ready.

as long as you learned the material first...I thought you were one of those people who skipped the material in favor of the test...

I assume that since you began calc sophomore year, you are now doing multi calc?

I self studied Calc BC (have to freshen up for the test), but I love math (i know tongos does as well) so it was easy for us to review concepts that we would have maybe made a careless mistake on. Now, if you are an avg math student or hate math, my adivce would be to NOT self study Calc without the help of an instructor because it will probably lead to countless nights of pulling your hair out. On the other hand, statistics is a cakewalk, and as long as you are good at punching stuff into a calculator you can self study for the test in 2 months time max.

"I assume that since you began calc sophomore year, you are now doing multi calc?"

I did multivariate calculus last summer along with number theory.

hmm...Cal Poly Pomona only let me take one course per quarter...
Diff Equations Summer 03, Multi Calc I Fall 03, Multi Calc II Winter 04, Linear Algebra Summer 04...(spring is absent because I was studying for AP Physics C and AP US History; the former I took indep. study, and the latter I had no mind for...I hate history...)

so your summer multi calc class covered vector calc as well? I wanna go to your school lol, Cal Poly doesn't have Number Theory at a time I can take it

I self studied multivariate calculus (advanced calc book), number theory and calculus (5 on the test without the class) without even stepping into a classroom that taught those subjects. I've only been up to pre- calculus level in a classroom. I love math.

I like math too...I'm gonna try the AMC 12 this year and see how I fare...
Same with USACO, and I think I can take the AP Comp Sci AB with minimal studying...
