Self studying classes that my school offers?

So I heard self studying for an AP instead of taking the class at your school can look bad because it makes you seem lazy.

But will colleges take into consideration if your schedule restrictions/academic track didn't allow you to take all the APs you wanted?

For example, I'm a sophomore taking biology honors at my school right now, and you can only take AP sciences after taking the honors class for that science. After biology, I am required to take chem honors junior year, then many colleges want physics honors as well so I'll be doing that senior year. This leaves no space in my schedule to take AP bio without cutting out electives, which I would rather avoid.

Also, my school only allows kids to take AP classes starting junior year.

So I plan on self studying for the AP Studio Art exam (not a written exam though) AP environmental science, AP Bio, and AP psychology. All of these courses are offered at my school but I will not have the space in my schedule to fit them. Will this make me look lazy to colleges, as if i'm only taking them because i couldn't be bothered to endure the courses?

Doesn’t make you look lazy. Self-studying is always better than taking a regular course, but only when you can get a good score on the AP test and you can actually learn all of the things that you would in the course.

Yeah that’s fine, just don’t self study for a class like English for example.

Although electives don’t count for much in admissions (unfortunately) unless they’re related to your passion/ECs/whatever, so if you’re aiming at top schools I would consider taking harder classes in place of electives.

It was to my understanding that if your school already offers the course, the admissions officers would question why you decided to self study instead, because it took less time. But yes, I do intend on studying to get a good score

Electives? So then would studying for something like AP euro be more impressive than AP psych? I’m actually not completely sure which classes would count as electives. AP Art is quite relevant to my EC so im keeping it

Wanting to save time by self-studying is a good thing. It shows that you can get more done in less time.
AP Psych is one of the easiest APs while Euro is of medium difficulty, so Euro > Psych.
