self studying for ap lang

Would I really need like a textbook for this? Or would a prep book suffice? I currently have the princeton review book, and the sparknotes AP Power pack which consists of 10 or so pages of condensed notes, a bunch of flashcards, and a few practice tests. What else do you suggest I need? Also, when should I start studying? Right now? January?

The test is more about your ability to understand difficult texts, so a textbook wouldn’t really help that much. How do you study for it?

Its really not that hard.
Reading section is like SAT critical reading, maybe a little bit tougher. The practice I did in my AP Lang class was much more difficult. Now, writing 3 essays in a 2 hour window was challenging for most people.

so uh…how do you guys suggest I study for it? I mean, there isn’t really a set curriculum or anything. Only thing I can think of doing ATM is to start memorizing the lit devices and terms. what else should i do? I mean i could do go through a few practice tests, but is there a certain way you self studiers study for the ap lang exam?

My experience with AP English Language was an unusual one. I bought the Kaplan study guide, only to find out it was the 2005 version. I borrowed my Leadership teacher’s 5 Steps to a 5 and I just skimmed through that. Oh, this was a week before the test.

There really isn’t anything you can study for… My friend photocopied a list of all the literary terms from the 2009 Kaplan version and I memorized that. But other than that, I kind of winged it.

My advice is just to get the Kaplan (2009) book and study those terms, and know the structure of the essays. Argue a point in the Argumentative essay, use your Documents to make a point in the Synthesis essay, and use your knowledge of literary terms for the Analysis essay.

I thought I failed that test horribly. My English teachers from 9-11th grade SUCK, and I’m not an English person. I thought it was so hard. But I managed a 4.
