I looked at the winter term for 2012 and was surprised at the expense. So for experiencing a semster abroad program what is the most financially prudent route to go?

On average Winter is about $5000 for the 3 week term. (verse just taking a class on campus-- "free" :) Do you know if there is any rebate for not taking attending a Elon on campus course since you are abroad? Or is that already considered in the study abroad tuition?

Since Jan/Winter term is already paid for with your fall tuition - it seems that it is more financially savy to take a full spring or fall semester abroad program vs. 3 week J term. I can't find any tuition ledger for the fall/winter programs.

I'm sure we won't get financial aid but anyone expereince with winning a scholarship through Elon?

The estimated cost for each semester program is a little different for each location but for the Fall for Costa Rica, San Jos

I know of no additional financial aid available for winter term that would not be available for full semester abroad programs.

Short term semester abroad programs are a much more directed and controlled experience than a full semester abroad and as such often include Elon professors, group travel within the country, hotel quality housing, and other perks not available or expected on full semester abroad programs. Both programs have their positive points but you are comparing apples to oranges. Our S chose, and loved the traditional full semester abroad, but I guarantee hotel quality housing was not involved.

I am responding to your detailed budget sheet. I am very confused and hope you can help as it appears you have researched this in detail. My daughter is a Teaching Fellow. I called their office yesterday to ask this very question. I was told that normal Room and Board and tuition fees would apply for the Spring Study Abroad semester. The airfare would be covered by the fellows program and I would only be additionally responsible for the insurance (which you noted is 190.00) and the “Study abroad fee” which I cannot get to “load” on the website. There is 1 price for London and 1 for Costa Rica. Can you please elaborate? We are really trying to determine our budget for the next four years.

My understanding is that the Semester Abroad fee includes housing abroad. We will not be paying any other housing fees for the fall semester at Elon (because he did not apply for housing for the fall, and he will sublet in the spring from a student going abroad in the spring)

However- If you applied for residential housing on campus for the fall- you are making a commitment for the year. It could be you are obligated to pay for the housing for the year if you decide to study abroad in the spring. (I would think there is a way out of this, but I don’t know. )
I was told that any scholarships or grants would be applied to the billable semester bill which includes:
Elon Fall Tuition * $13,767.00
International Health Insurance * $190.00
Semester Study Abroad Fee (including housing) * $2,220.00
Billable subtotal: $16,177.00
