I love NYC.
I want to study at NYU or Columbia for a semester as a visiting student.

A staff from NEU said,
You will need to provide the syllabus and curriculum, and if the course is not offered at Northeastern, then it may be approved.

I am sure I could find courses at NYU or Columbia that are not offered at NEU.
However, I just want to take ordinary courses that are probably offered at any university.
Only reason is so I can explore NYC while taking courses (not wasting time).
I would not go if credit wouldn't transfer to NEU.

Will I have hard time trying to get this approved?

I really have no idea how difficult it would be to get an full course load approved. However, many students do their coop in NYC and there is even some arranged housing for that. Maybe that would be option for you to consider.

Northeastern’s policy is that they want you to get a Northeastern education if you are a Northeastern student. This means that they don’t want you taking summer classes at your local school because you think they’ll be easier, for example. The exception is, as you noted, if you are taking something that Northeastern just doesn’t offer. This also applies to spending a semester elsewhere (excluding study abroad), so it would likely be difficult to get courses approved.

However, as @bhmomma pointed out, co-op could be a great way to get that experience in NYC. You also wouldn’t have to worry about classes, exams, and homework during that time, as well, so your free time would really be free to explore New York. I was looking at study abroad in Germany, but I ended up choosing to do an international co-op there instead, and it was to not have to stress about an unfamiliar academic environment. It was a really great experience to try out co-op somewhere else.
