Semi-Bizarre AP Chem Situation

So, the first class after winter break (january 5thish?) our ap chem teacher had a brain tumor of some sort and had to drop out for a majority of the year. The school scrambled to find a replacement teacher, and while we have one now, due to the time period where we had no teacher, as well as snow days, we are no incredibly far behind. The topics we have covered so far: Chemical Reactions, Stoichiometry, Gases, Acids/Bases and Buffers, Equillibrium, and we are just now finishing Ksp.

While our new teacher says he has a schedule for how to teach us the rest of the curriculum, the fact that we keep getting pushed back worries me some, and I am doubting our ability to finish the entire curriculum for the AP Exam by the date.

Is it possible for my class to get through the rest of the curriculum in the 4ish months left? Perhaps by self-study?

If I'm not able to completely prepare myself for the exam, and end up getting a mediocre score, is there a way to explain the score to colleges? (it does seem like a reasonable explanation)

No you won’t be able to explain to them, I do not think by any chance that they will even consider your case.

The AP Chemistry Exam contains more than those topics; you are lucky however to have covered Acid/Bases since that is a VERY common topic on the Exam. In fact, I would say you have already covered some of the toughest topics; atomic theory is not too hard either. Keep going with your self-studying. Just work on your labs

Colleges don’t consider AP scores very strongly anyway, so it won’t matter.

wow, you cover some of the major topics. All those left are thermodynamics, electrochemistry, spectroscopy, Lewis structures, and kinetics and you don’t need to worry yourself with organic. Besides, you might need to self-study if the class doesn’t finish before AP exam.

Last year, for my AP Chem class, due to lack of time, we only got to the basics of equilibrium. We were about to go onto buffers, but too late. Dang the block schedule. However, I was able to self-study the rest of the materials along with restudying past contents and receive a 5 on the AP chem exam. So, self-studying can help you get a good score on the AP exam if your motivated and ambitious.

For me, I have already covered, Kinetics, Thermodynamics, Atomic Theory, Lewis structures (bonding), and Gas Laws.

We are starting on Phase changes

We didn’t cover some topics because it was covered in the “Pre-AP course”, also my class is being dragged by those people who are doing it concurrently with the AP course.

I’m in a somewhat similar situation (My AP Chem teacher was pregnant, left Jan, coming back March) and the topics we cover with the sub, I have to self study essentially. You can do it, you have two and a half months.

One nice thing about the AP exams is that you CAN self-study material if the class doesn’t teach. What I would do is pick up a review book or read ahead in the textbook so that you know all the material.

alright, its good to know that we covered the most difficult topics already

you are behind = / We’re like 3 chapters past that. Same with lemone, were past that. Lol wierd I guess our teacher is just geared for the AP test.
