Senate Internship Drug Testing

Hi,

I was offered an internship for a senator at his local office. No where on the application or in their emails did they mention anything about a drug test. I don’t really do drugs, but I have smoked marijuana recently and am a little worried there’s a chance I would not pass a drug test if they decided to give one on the first day. Does anyone have any experience interning in a congressional office and if so were you drug tested? Please only real advice, I don’t need links to “detoxes” or lectures on the dangers of drugs.

Thanks!

If you are a casual smoker, stop now and it will leave your system. If you smoke every day it will likely take a month. If you can’t give it up for the duration of the internship, the internship isn’t that important to you.

Look at the big picture of what getting busted while you are employed there would mean to the senator. He would be hung out to dry by the opposing party.

You can probably expect a lot of “surprise” drug tests when you apply for jobs in the future.

I have no idea if they will test you. You can buy urine dipsticks and test yourself if you want. It takes 2-6 weeks for it to get our of your system. The thinner you are faster it leaves your body as the metabolite is stored in fat.

Exercise, drink cranberry juice and take Niacin.

It’s not going to really matter if you test positive or not. You will still have to pass some sort of security screening in which questions will be asked and honesty is the best and really, only policy.

Don’t worry Bill Clinton did all that and still was President. Key is to be honest. Stop using it for a while. That’s what one boss told me when he sold our company to a company that requires drug testing. Note I don’t use any drugs even the OTC type but I was told by my boss.

Sorry if I’m late to the party, but I’m currently interning at a senator’s local office (two weeks in), and so far they haven’t tested me. Your senator could be a lot more strict than mine, so if they do, just do what justonedad said and be honest about it. Good luck!
