I am currently applying for accounting internships (not Big 4 this year) and was curious about the drug testing procedures. I fully accept to be drug tested for any internship I may get, but was wondering about the timing of said drug test. I last smoked about a week ago and was wondering if I would be ok.

When in the interviewing process does the drug test usually occur? Is it only after you've been selected? Would they test me in the middle of my semester or would it occur after I'm out of school in May?

No company will drug test during the interview process (I’m not sure they’re even legally permitted to drug test interviewees). If a company tests you (not all will drug test you, but many do), you’ll be tested after accepting an offer, probably right before you start.

But keep in mind that many company drug test with urine and hair.

It is expensive to recruit and bring on an intern. Why would they be trying to trick you or surprise you with a drug test which might screw up their investment? Companies are always upfront about their drug policies because they don’t WANT to catch you.

They aren’t hiding anything from you. If your paperwork says you’ll be drug tested then plan on a drug test. If it only says they reserve the “right” to do so than you can expect them only to test if you give them reason to.

Yes, it will most likely be after the semester or close to the end. But keep in mind those hair tests go back 3 months so you want to stop right now.

They usually won’t tell you if it’s urine or hair or both. You just show up and they tell you. You also probably won’t be told if you’re going to be drug tested or not. Pretty much everyone has a policy giving them the ability to drug test, it’s only some that drug test when you’re hired (I would say about half).

You’ll be contacted by HR before you start requesting a bunch of information (criminal record search request, possibly a credit request, personal and contact information, citizenship information, and possibly a drug test). That’s why you’ll know what you need to do.
