Has anybody ever sent a Cd with a couple of songs from a band you've formed as a supplemental art material? Not the concert band but like a rock band etc. Is this a good idea?

No. It needs to be solo work unless, maybe, it's something you composed.

It couldn't hurt, but I doubt it would help, considering (now I'm going out on a limb here) I doubt you're the next Stevie Ray Vaughn.

It will say on the Common App Art Supplement what is and is not acceptable.

Yeah I'm wondering this too...

I have a similar question. I use a computer program to compose classical, to overcome my lack of musical theory knowledge, songs and the program plays the songs for me. Is this okay to send in?

oh and SRV isn't that great IMO

^^^ Last statement was full of fail.

I think "it depends" is the only possible answer to these questions. Did you form the band? Are you the principal performer? Did you write the music? Are you really, really good? Is your band signed to a label? Are you applying to a school with a contemporary music major or focus?
As for the computer-generated music, I know I've read on some submission forms (this may have been for summer composition programs or contests) that recordings of actual instruments is preferred, but computer-generated files will be accepted.
The general wisdom on supplemental submissions that has been shared on CC lots of times is that you should only do it if it's really, really good.

juliushark, you are so mistaken about SRV. :)

"juliushark, you are so mistaken about SRV."

You missed the 'IMO'. It's impossible to be mistaken about one's own opinion even if everyone else disagrees.

i have a question about this also, this is my case:

i am a huge jazz fan, i've been playing jazz guitar and jazz bass for years. i am adept at composition. so if i write a couple songs, get them published via ASCAP, and make recordings of me playing those songs, would it benefit my application? i am not planning on going to music school, but i am wondering if it would help with the admissions process. any insights are appreciated :)

Again, the collective wisdom is that this can help you if your level of achievement is very high. For example, are you a good enough musician to have a reasonable shot at getting into the jazz band at the schools where you are applying? If so, the supplement probably makes sense.

I'm already playing with a college jazz band :P
