Sending ACT Scores for ED1

Hey everyone! I’m interested in applying Early Decicion 1 for Emory/Emory Oxford, but my ACT scores are a low (27 composite, 28 suprescore ). I just took the ACT this Saturday and I think i improved some, but I don’t think I did well enough. I know Emory accepts scores sent in after the ED deadline, but they aren’t guaranteed to be used during the admissions review if they don’t come early enough. The ED deadline is November 1st (Sunday) and the earliest I could get my scores are on November 3rd (Tuesday). Is it worth it to take the October ACT and risk sending my scores after the review?

I don’t know if that’ll work. Do your EC’s compensate any?

Thanks for the response! I have relatively good ECs and leadership, but they’re not necessarily extraordinary. I have a 3.94/4.0 UW and I’ll graduate with 7 APs and 7 years of foreign language, but I don’t know if that’s enough to make up for my low test scores.

It depends on the AP scores that you will send in. If you can display subject based excellence, it can make up for the generic standardized test scores. Adcoms like high SAT’s/ACT’s mainly because it makes them look good in rankings, but in terms of having a shot based on potential academic success, it is the GPA and AP/IB scores that matter more. An AP score or less tells how well you can handle a more rigorous final examination. If you have any at 4 or higher, I would send them. This is also where SATII subject test could have helped. In college you take specific courses, not those that make you successful on the SAT or GRE for example…

I have 3 AP Exams already taken (USH, Lang, and WH) and they are all 4/5s. I already took the USH subject test and got a 720. I was considering taking the SAT Lit Test, but I’ll strongly consider that after your advice! Thanks for all your help!

Yes, definitely send those or find some way to mention them because they are alternative ways of showing ability to take challenging exams. In addition, if those AP’s are related to an area of interest (say you express interest in social sciences or humanities), then even better…because it shows you’re a match for those fields academically (much like a person claiming they want to do math or physics at a top school should probably have AP credit in math and/or science and perhaps have won awards at least at the school or local level in STEM).
