My daughter will be attending Syracuse University in the fall, and I'm starting to think about how we will handle sending her money if she needs it. We don't have the same banks in our town that they have near the SU campus (that would make transfers so easy!). How do you guys handle this? Can one bank electronically transfer money to another bank? Or does SU have a debit card that I can put money on? Can it be used off campus?

I really want her to have a local bank so she can cash her paychecks.

If you are eligible for USAA, consider a joint account with your daughter. You could easily deposit money that she could access with a debit card. Fees for ATM withdrawals from other banks are refunded by USAA .

Otherwise you could open an account with a local bank in her college community and transfer funds with Xoom. Our son is a student at Cambridge University in England, and we use Xoom to transfer funds to his English bank account. The fee is reasonable and the exchange rate is pretty good.

Thanks so much Irishdoctor! I didn’t know about USAA, but I think we are eligible and am looking into opening an account there. I love that they have no fees and she can deposit checks with her phone or computer. It may be our best option!!

Weluvnik: I’m guessing that you don’t have a Chase branch near you? There’s a Chase on Adams St around the corner from Marshall…that’s the one we used…

I second the recommendation for a USAA debit card – my two boys have each had a card for years. The oldest is in college and the youngest is in boarding school – it works great! The app is great for transferring money and checking balances. They have traveled extensively overseas and have had no issues.

Thanks for the replies… We do not have any of the banks near SU here at home. That would be ideal. In addition to usaa I also found an Internet bank called ing direct that doesn’t charge fees and would allow me to transfer money to her account. Is anyone familiar with them?
