Most schools I'm applying to require only one level of recommendation. I'm not worried about the less selective ones (NEU, BU, American, et al.), as the recommendation I have from a teacher/club advisor is very good. But for the more selective schools (Brandeis, NYU), I would like to send a supplemental rec from my senior year Calc teacher who has seen an incredibly strong work ethic and a true love of the material. I also have a 100 avg. in the class, which doesnt hurt.

My question is, should I send more than one rec is a school only requires one? Would it be looked down upon? And if so, would I send in another copy of the rec form with the additional letter?

It depends on the school (I know Yale explicitly says they don't want supplemental recs, others will say that it's fine by them so long as it's not repetitive). Check out the website or call.

I suggest sending it in only if it distinguishes you and mentions something that is not on the other recommendation. Maybe your first essay may speak about your generosity and sincerity. If your second one speaks about your willingness to learn, send that in as well, since this message differs from the former.

NYU pretty specifically says they don't want supplemental anything, including letters. I believe the direct quote from them is "It will just be more paper in your file." However, I sent a supplementary letter from my drama teacher, and I got in today! If you think the calc letter would be relatively similar to your first letter, don't send it, but if it would bring up something completely new, feel free. Either way, they DO promise to read everything you send.
