I was just wondering whether it would benefit me in terms of admissions to upload a music supplement on the Common App as I haven’t done anything amazing like all state orchestra, soloist at Carnegie Hall etc. I have played the cello for many years, and have a diploma that technically allows me to teach here in Australia, but I’m nothing amazing especially for the schools I’m applying to (think Ivies, top 20). I hope to continue playing the cello in college so should I upload a supplement, or would it hurt me if they think it’s bad?
It depends on the college, but many people who submit music supplements are submitting supplements which would be appropriate for conservatory admissions, even if they are applying to an LAC. If your performances at that level, feel free to submit. If not, don’t.
Yet confusingly, I accompanied my Ivy alma mater admissions rep on some school visits a few years ago. When asked the same thing, she advised to add what you feel is essential about you – even if you weren’t a top level artist/performer.
For her, she said she wanted to understand what was dear to the applicant.
Now that’s one person’s perspective and I’ve never heard it repeated elsewhere. . In general, i’ve heard advice along the lines of skieurope’s conventional wisdom.
Ok, thank you for your responses!
