Is it common for applicants to mail in a resume in addition to the activities listed in their commonapp? Or do most colleges prefer that you stay within the app itself and prioritize your activities?

I sent in a booklet / portfolio inculding a resume, a personal "view book" with pictures and short writing sample highlightning my theater and writing experience with every application. It's difficult to show extracurricular "passsion" as just lines on an online app without visuals. I just figured if they didnt want it ..theyd throw it out...they wouldnt decline me just for submitting an unsolicited portfolio. go with your gut feeling...if you think you need to submit a little more material to tell the story, go for it. (I think the suits keep saying dont send in extra stuff is just to keep the volume down....but this is your life..to them you start out as one of 100,000 pieces of paper)

I agree. I do not think it can hurt if you submit them. In fact, I think photos is a captivating admissions strategy and unique from simply jotting down a few words to describe your passion. I plan on sending a bunch of additional stuff in, not to annoy adcoms, but because they are different important aspects of my career and I hope to present it in the most appealing, descriptive way as I can.

few pages of info are gud..like 4-5 with 2-3 photos but anything more than that goes in dust....infact top colleges take it as negative impression if someone sends in more stuff.... fillin out ur passion in those few words is an art... and u have to master it....

Also at a majority of places they simply throw extra stuff away unless it is a resume or something.... u feel u r showing passion by giving pics but what will adcom see there....they sort of know it all by the years of experience .....

Remember for an adcomm who processess 5000 applicants..do u think reading extra stuff wud be even possible in huge amts eve

What about ED, when only 1000 people apply...do you think adcoms can spend more time on applicants and get less frustrated?

even worse......coz the pool is smalll but so is the time...... decision come out within 45 days..... so more faster do they process the app

I suppose if you do this, then applying on line is out of the question. I too wanted to include a picture with one of my essays. They say a picture is worth a 1000 words and after they read my essay and then see the picture - it really ties things up. The picture in question is one of those 'heart melting' ones, not of me - but of the experience I am writing about in my essay. But then again, the adcom might think that I am playing on their emotions and eliminate me right there and then. Who knows.
