would it be best to attach a resume on common app on the additional information section and if so, would you just copy and paste whatever you have in resume-form?
Or, is it better not to include a resume at all?

no, do not include a resume.

may i ask why? do colleges not like it? or do they not read it at all?

They ask for the information they want in the common application or their application already. If you are filling out the Common App correctly, it would be quite repetitive with your resume. Admissions officers already have tons of applications to review, the last thing they want is a repetitive item that they have to try to match to the application. If you have items that don’t fit on the Common App (a MOOC might be an example), list (concisely with a clear header and bullets) in the Additional Information section that does not fit in the Common App format. There are a few old school GCs who (lazily, IMHO) still might suggest you do it, but I think in the days of high application volumes and the current design of applications, you shouldn’t attach it.

okay! thank you!

Four of the six schools my son applied to last year mentioned (without asking) that they accept resumes. Two of them strongly encouraged them. My son created a two page resume and emailed it to the admissions department at all six schools. They added it to his “folder”. He was accepted at all six schools.

It was a nice synopsis of all his grades, achievements, etc. It certainly had some redundancy but also had some new information (e.g., a couple of industry conferences he attended with me and a Summer program he attended at CMU.)

Given the number of apps admissions counselors have to review I actually think a resume makes it easier for them to assess a candidate, if it is concise and well-organized.

thank you for the insight! since i’m guessing every school is different, i’ll email the admissions office and ask whether it is encouraged or not for the particular school. thank you!

Including a resume will only make you look like a pickup truck. Don’t do it.
