I am planning on majoring in English and hoping to have a career in writing or journalism. I would like to send an additional essay about my love for reading/writing to WashU as a sort of portfolio piece, especially because it is a reach school for me and I want admissions to know it is my first choice. However, does admissions look kindly upon this or would they just throw it away and be annoyed? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated :)

I called up yesterday with a similar question since I would be an engineering student and was thinking of submitting an essay about the research I have done. My regional admission officer said there is "no limit to additional information" (seemed very encouraging, in fact) and suggested I email it to the admissions office so that they could add it to my file. Her only advice was that I make sure it further develop me as a candidate, rather than just adding on to my resume. What you are suggesting seems like exactly that!
