She should be fine with CP English, particularly with the rigor of the rest of her course load.

My D did the same (with the rest of her courses being honors or AP) and has not had difficulty with acceptances to engineering programs. My D made this decision because a) she hated the teacher and knew she would have to struggle to get a decent grade, b) she really doesn’t enjoy the subject (particularly literary analysis), c) she wanted to focus more on STEM subjects, and d) she’s a 3 season athlete so something had to give.

My D took AP Calc and was in the regular English track in HS. Got into 8 of the 9 schools she applied to, wasn’t a problem for her.

Her HS was very competitive and she got A’s in all of her English classes in college. She never took Honors History either and received A’s in those classes also in college.

She was in Honors in Math and Science. It’s what she was good at and what she wanted to do after HS. She had a very focused EC which took a lot of time.

She needs to do very well first semester senior year, taking rigorous courses in the area she wants to study which being Math/engineering courses centers around BC Calc which is something she wants to do. Stick with the Honors English and drop either the Psych or Econ. She needs to nail it GPA wise and if either of those courses has a lot of work that has to be done, it can be a problem. Econ can be very time consuming. My son is an Econ/Math major, seems to be wired for the subjects, but those first econ courses did take up a heck of a lot of his time assignmentwise.

My freshman at college made a mistake first term taking two courses he enjoyed very much in that they took up a lot of time which ate into time he needed in courses that were required. It didn’t hit until at the end of the term when the two of his required courses needed a lot of time and he was struggling with a third required course. He should have taken an incomplete in something, but he forged through and did not do as well as he could have done. Economics was one of the courses in the mix as was Calculus and Psychology. But this is colege, not high school and really your D is undertaking the exact load he had this year, but SHE HAS TO ACE THEM in order to be a viable candidate in light of her lack lustre junior grades, including that C in an AP Course. I suggest she has a very tight schedule core classes where she can shine with AP Calc her crown jewel and a course where she has some breathing room, like Choir or anything that shows interest in something but doesn’t take up a lot of valuable time with tedious work and requirements, because she is not going to be able to drop or “I” the course. She needs an English and she needs and wants the Chem. Take just one other course that shows a whimsical side to her and gives her somer relief time and grade wise.

Thanks for all of the feedback. It’s really valuable.

Basically, she has to take 5 academic classes; It’s too bad she can’t just take 4. She’s already taking instrumental music as her non-academic elective, which is just class time, occasional performances, and practice she does anyway. She did AP Physics B last year and got a 5.

I thought AP Psychology is supposed to be really easy. She’s going to check on how much work it really is. Maybe there is something academic with even less work that’s not a total waste of time that will allow her to do Honors English. It’s really a lot of work though. That 5th academic class would have to be close to nothing outside of class for it not to be a crazy hard schedule.
