So for three years you’ve been living with this fantasy that Senior year would be fabulous. Now you arrive and you find . . . tests, college applications, money challenges, social weirdness and lots of details that suck the joy out of what is supposed to be your Top Dog year.

Welcome to adulthood. There are three things that can help a great deal.
- Get out a measuring tape. Stretch it out to 82 inches (typical life span for an American). See where 18 is. There is a lot of life after Senior year.
- Get out of the High School bubble.

This was written by Doris Burville of Olympia WA:

Always we hear the cry of the teenager, “What can we do? Where can we go?”. The answer is “Go Home”. Hang the storm windows, paint the woodwork, Rake the leaves, mow the lawn, shovel the walk. Wash the car, learn to cook, scrub some floors, repair the sink, build a boat, get a job."

Help the minister, priest or rabbi, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army. Visit the sick, assist the poor, study your lessons.

And then, when you are through – read a book.

Your parents do not owe you entertainment. Your city or village does not owe you recreational facilities. The world does not owe you a thing. You owe the world something. You owe it your time and energy and your talents so that no one will be at war or in poverty or sick or lonely again.

You are supposed to be mature enough to accept some of the responsibility your parents have carried for years. "

There’s more, but that’s the gist of it.

3) Tune into your spiritual side. It can be religious or nature based, but tune into some greater truths and realities than “I have no ride to coffee”.

Try this one from the Bible: “I cried because I had no shoes until I saw a man who had no feet.”

Start counting your many, many blessings (home, computer, bed, blankets, toothbrush, breakfast, shoes, shampoo and so very much, much more) and then high school life seems silly and inane. There’s a reason we send " kids" to it.
