Senior Insomnia

By the end of my junior year, I had a 3.8 something and took fairly advanced classes (mostly honors plus an AP). My senior year is five AP's plus Latin I. I was able to handle it just fine...until the insomnia started. I didn't sleep more than a half hour to an hour each night for about five weeks but was too stubborn to go to a doctor about it. This resulted in incredibly bad test scores, and leveling it out with homework grades, I got B's in all of my AP classes and a 101% for Latin in the first quarter. Will this kill me for colleges such as NYU, USC, Emory, UMD etc.? I'm doing much better for the second marking period. I've never had this happen to me before, and I don't want it to look like laziness, so should I bother mentioning it on the application? Don't they not look at your senior year very much, anyway?

Thanks.

Why would a 101% be bad in Latin? That's . . . better than perfect. And I think you should really see a doctor to sort this out.

Lol, the 101% in Latin was the awesome part, especially since I want to major in some kind of language thing. But the B's in AP Econ, AP Bio, AP German, APUSH, etc. are what I'm worried about. I could've done better if I hadn't been lacking sleep!!

Oh, it subsided a few weeks ago as randomly as it had started. I'm back to normal sleeping now. So I don't know what a doctor could do.

LATIN IS AWESOME!
:-)

I have over a 100% average, we get a lot of extra credit opportunities... mm... LATIN MOMENTS! LOL

Every class we're allowed to tell our teacher 2 things in our lives that we have seen that relate to either ancient greek or ancient rome/latin and it can max out to 10% of our grade lol

Anyway... I'm kind of in the same boat as you, but I guess I'm sleeping a little more. I'm usually getting 4 or 5 hours of sleep a night. Earlier in the year I was able to wake up really early... now my body just won't let me and I need to sleep for at least 5 hours.

5 AP classes is tough, i'm taking 3.5 and i'm barely getting by. Consider talking with one of your teachers about getting a little leniency with tests, if you have like 3 on one day ask if you'd be able to take theirs at another time... I'm sure at least one of them will understand.

I concur. Latin IS amazing. Language is the one thing I can do with half a brain. I just got all the bonus questions on the tests correct. My grade was 103%, but then I kept getting 100s on everything, so it brought it down :-/ My German class was messed up, also. The regular teacher was diagnosed with brain cancer, and my school has been having difficulty hiring a competent teacher...we've been through four so far, and everyone's grades have suffered as a result.

But anyway, I'm more concerned about what colleges will think about this...especially if I don't explain it, which I can't because I didn't go to a doc.

Yes... it is quite a sad day when getting a 100% on a test actually brings your average DOWN lol.

I would definitely mention how your course load is effecting you in the "other information" section on the common app. You don't necessarily need to see a doctor, just ensure that you do not self-diagnose yourself with insomnia. Most colleges wouldn't allow their students to take the heavy course load that many CC students take, it simply is not reasonable.

What do you mean? I thought they wanted to see the most rigorous courseload possible, and mine isn't even that heavy.

Sounds like a neurological disorder or something... see a doctor. :)

Oh, I've randomly started sleeping again. Like two weeks before the marking period ended, which was too late to do much. I'm just worried about how this'll affect my chances.

Can anyone let me know how much this will affect me in the application process? Should I bother noting anything?
