Senior Schedule Forum

Personally I would choose Bio over Spanish any day, but thats coming from a science-type of guy’s perspective. Considering that you are already taking another science, there is no need for Bio (in theory). So I would not recommend one over the other, unless you want to take Bio now so that you will be familiar with the subject that do better in premed courses.

@zala
I think I’m leaning towards Bio at this point. Probably because my Spanish 4 Accel final today was truly awful, and if the AP exam is like that, I’m guaranteed a 2 (if I’m lucky)! Then again, I could also self study Bio and take Spanish. Or enjoy the extra free period!

(for junior year)
Pre-calc
AP chem
APUSH
AP english lang
Physics H
Anatomy H

Probably will self-study 1 more AP class, any suggestions? I was thinking maybe Enrivomental science because im taking AP bio this year and acing it. Environmental Science is not offered at my high school so i don’t know where i would take it :S

I think that AP bio is a great class however, I do enjoy the subject and my teacher. The consensus among people here is that it is boring memorization. I wonder sometimes if we take the same class, of course Im pretty sure that my teacher has ADHD and is a complete spazz… Sometime it’s fun just to get him on tangents

senior year
AP Economics (don’t know if it both or micro or macro)
AP Calculus AB (damn, my school doesn’t have BC and I have to take a math for senior due to stupid graduation requirements. Plus I’ve taken AB exam in my sophomore year. The worst part is that there will be juniors who think I’m stupid/average since I’m a senior taking that class.)
AP English Literature and Composition
AP Japanese Language and Culture
AP Biology

Currently:
AP English Language
AP Psychology

Senior Year:
AP Calculus (not sure which one yet)
AP Eng. Literature
AP Econ + Gov
AP Art History
AP 2-d Studio
Photography Intern
Multimedia Intern

I feel like my senior schedule will be pretty time-consuming, which is why I chose to not take a science class (my weakest subject). Has anyone taken two AP studio classes (like drawing and 2-d design) at the same time? Would they be counted towards college as one?

@curtislee

Thanks for the heads up on bio. My friend who’s taking it this year (a mistake of mine was choosing an internship class over bio), said that it’s a good, but sometimes boring class.

I’m self-studying World and Psych this year. World fascinates me (haven’t even bought the psych book yet… should get on that), but I don’t know how much you like history. I don’t think Enviro will get you far though, as few schools take the credit. What about one of the Econs or quantitative sciences?

I’ve heard high schools aren’t supposed to weight at all. It’s pointless because some do and some don’t. Colleges look over your classes and assign their own values to the classes you take.

I don’t want to take a hard senior year. I’m not like the rest of this insane forum (wow, SO MANY smart people *** o__o):

Spanish 4 AP (an absolute must; I love Spanish a lot)
Bio AP
Calculus BC AP *
AP Rhetoric
Band
Choir/Other/None

Whee. Compared to the rest of you, this is humble. I wouldn’t take AP math - I HATE MATH - were it not for our school’s solid AP Calculus program. Our teachers have this guarantee where if you “do your work, you’ll pass the test”. Last year, for example, 80% of our students taking the calc ab test got a 5 (which, thinking in “big picture” terms (we had like 400 - 500 people take it), is impressive).

**First of all is this reasonable for my senior year?
AP Bio
AP Chem
AP Spanish Literature
AP Math
Honors English 12 (might self study the AP Lit exam since im in AP Lang, but i don’t want to take another AP English course, its just busy work)

…and Easy non AP/ honors/ regular electives

**Secondly, what AP math to take Stats or Calc? I want to go into medicine. Im currently taking Precalculus, and have an A. My teacher won’t reccomend me for AP Calc she says to take either AP Stats or Calc GT, saying that people who take AP Calc after Precalc are not successful. Is it really that difficult to go into AP Calc if your precalc teacher is a bad teacher? Can I manage AB Calc with the above schedule (3 other APs)? Should I try to do a waiver and get myself into AP Calc or go with Stats?? I feel like AP Calc will be more valuable in the long run and in college, IF i succeed. I MUST have an AP math to get the AP award from our school (im not talking about the college board one here, though im working towards that too) and I only have room for one class. help me with my decision please.

CollegeMounting, I would definitely go with AP Calc. From everyone I’ve talked to it seems like a normal progression to go from Precalc to AP Calc. It can definitely be a bit of a shock the first couple weeks (going from Precalc with a SUPER easy teacher to AP Calc BC was NOT the best idea) but it normally works out once you get used to it. It would also help to have AP Calc for colleges, especially if you want to go into medicine, because you usually take the equivelant of AP Calc in, like, 6 weeks or something. Having the background would help you out a lot. I can also answer any specific questions you may have about the course.

Also, in regards to my above post (may be a while back) do you think it’s bad that I’m not taking a history senior year?? It’s not like I’m taking an easy schedule but I would definitely prefer to take two sciences and keep both my languages if it won’t hurt me when I’m applying. Thanks!!

English IV H or AP Lit/Comp (not sure. Seniors can exempt one final and APs don’t get finals so that might play into what I take, and also just the amount of busy work. I’m not concerned with the material or anything, just don’t know if I want the work)
Calc III/Diff Eq H or AP Stat (once again, not sure. Depends on the teachers themselves/classes themselves/what looks better/exempting finals/lots of other things)
AP Enviro
AP Psych
AP Latin Vergil (I’m worried that it could bring down my GPA a little but my strongest subjects are math & Latin so I’d almost feel like a wimp for not taking AP, plus 4 years of language, one being an AP, looks good right?)
AP Macro
AP Euro or AP Gov/Pol (not too sure. Euro sounds more interesting to me, but Gov/Pol is supposed to be pretty easy, but at the same time I might not be prepared enough for the AP exam?)

So if anyone can give me advice about AP vs. H English, Calc III vs. AP Stat, and AP Euro vs. Gov Pol, please tell me!

@FBItomboy, thanks so much for the reply. No, I don’t think not having a history will hurt your chances. You have a pretty rigorous schedule, and the doubling up on sciences and languages shows your commitment/ focus on that area. In addition to this, don’t take a class you don’t want to just to impress the college.

Also, Could you answer my other question if I could manage those 4 AP classes: Bio, Chem, Spanish Lit, and Calc. These classes, especially Chem and Calc are considered pretty difficult at my school. Is this too much focus on science or math going to be difficult or is it fine?

AP Lit is usually considered to be a harder AP test, but whether or not you get college credit for the test lies mostly on which college you want to go to. My college exempts students from the English requirement who get a 4 or 5 in Lang, but my friends college only accepts Lit. So it does vary widely. Look at your possible choices for colleges and then decide from there.

I personally would say AP Bio. It is part of the three main sciences and seems to hold more weight with colleges. But keep in mind, because of this it is a harder class. It’s up to you.

Well, it really depends. If you have been taking Spanish all your years of high school and have not taken a Spanish AP test, then I might just stick with that. However, AP Psych would be good to get you out of a general education requirement. I honestly wouldn’t bother with APES… I think you should go with AP Spanish though because it would probably be the most impressive out of the three.

If you are a math person, then Stats will bore you to death and make you regret ever taking it. I, as a math person, would choose multi-variate and diffy q’s over stats any day.
As for the other question… I would be biased towards AP Chem. However, if you want to go into a medical field than anatomy would be your best bet. Microbiology would be best to take at your actual college rather than a community college.

Colleges do realize that not all schools give APs, but they are not going to know if your normal classes are difficult or not. When they see AP they ultimately see it as a college/hard level class. Therefore, I would have to go with the second option. However, as long as you keep your GPA up and take the hardest classes you can, it probably won’t matter much in the end.

To be honest, colleges could care less. If you have even two I think most would be okay. Considering you will have three, you are perfectly fine.

You can manage. Chem is supposed to be a very hard AP test (well, to people who aren’t as crazy about chem as me), but definitely manageable. Calculus is easy and Bio is just a bunch of memorizing. Spanish might get annoying, but you have probably been in Spanish for 3+ years, so I wouldn’t worry.

Tentative schedule:
AP Lit
AP Gov
AP Spanish Lit (independent study since I’m taking AP Spanish this year + have finished my school’s curriculum)
AP Psych (self-study)
Pre-calc (because I loathe math)
Child Development II
Senior Interest Project in Biblical Archetypes in Mythology…if I can find a teacher to be my mentor.

I’m debating whether to self-study AP Art History this year or next year…any opinions?
