This is for every Junior (and younger as well but mostly juniors) who are wondering what classes to take for their senior to improve their odds at highly selective schools. For example, AP Lit vs. AP Stat. And the age old question of whether or not to take an AP Class that's in the second semester (will colleges even care that you're taking it?). Anyway, post if you need help figuring out what classes to take or if you know which class is better.

My question is should I take AP Lit or AP Lang?

Another: AP Environmental or AP Bio?

AP Bio and AP Lit carry more weight with colleges but are harder to get good scores on. Your choice. My classes:
AP Calculus BC
AP Physics C
AP Euro
2 really hard but non - AP english classes
Math History (sweet class - only first semester)
Band (second sem)
Speechwriting (second sem)

My classes,
AP Lit
AP Physics C
AP Chem
AP Calc BC
AP US GoPo
AP Spanish

Do you guys think i should take AP Spanish, Or AP Psych or AP Envi Sci?

I registered today:
-Band
-Principles of Engineering Tech.
-AP USH
-Spanish 12
-Calculus
-PE
-Yearbook
-Physics

Dude math history sounds interesting.
@sache, I would take AP Spanish, cause it makes you seem s a lot more well rounded.
Does anyone know what AP Comparative gov is like? I’m doing either that, AP Psych, or AP Stat.

Yeah, only kids in BC Calc are eligible so it’s not like a slacker class or anything. It’s given me a lot of really random knowledge that I’ll be able to impress people with wherever I end up next year :).

ap stats or multi-variable calc + differential equations (local community college)?
ap chem or anatomy(community college) or microbiology(community college)?

My tentative schedule:
-Journalism
-ASB
-AP Environmental Science (APES)/ AP Chemistry (if it’s available next year)
-AP English Literature and Comp.
-AP Calculus BC
-AP U.S. Government/Econ. [It’s essentially AP U.S. Gov. all year]

-self study APES/AP Chem [depending on which are available]
-self study AP Spanish Literature

*I am taking AP Spanish Language this year and I have otherwise exhausted the other AP science courses available at my school.

Are there any more AP’s for me to consider? Are Macro/microeconomics or even AP Statistics worth the effort?

What do you think looks better for colleges - a private school with lots of supposedly “difficult” non-AP classes or a public school that vomits AP classes all over?

@Drought: I would think the first one would be better if you can maintain a good class rank and then take AP tests for a couple classes. But if not, the public school might be a better choice for class rank and AP classes.

Yeah, I’m 25% in my class but my private school doesn’t weight and at least half of the people in front of me take all easy classes, while I take every honors/AP class I can get my hands on (trust me, these are tough at my school). I know kids who get 3.95’s in easy classes and are dumb as hell while there are kids in my honors classes who get 3.1’s and 3.2’s and are really smart - for example, one of my good friends has a 3.3 in all honors/AP but has a 2320. I kind of wish I had just gone to one of the huge public suburban schools around me and gotten a 4.7 and taken 20 AP’s actually - I feel like my low class rank really hurts me.

Next year I’m taking:
AP Chem
AP Physics
AP French Lang
AP English Lit
AP Latin
Multivariable Calc and Differential Equations online

Do you think it will hurt me that I don’t have a history? Most colleges only require three years and I’m taking APUSH this year, so I should be ok. And Drought, I completely get where you are coming from. Although my private school doesn’t rank, we have a stricter policy on when students can take APs but all our classes are harder than those of the local public schools. I think it will work out better for us in the end.

Zala, I would definitely go with Multivar and diff eq because it will give you a better feeling of upper level math courses in college, while AP Stats is much less calculus driven (although still important and can be difficult). BringItOn, I agree completely with above posters that AP Bio and AP Lit are the two most difficult.

I may take:
[ul]
[]Calculus III / Differential Equations (local college)
[]AP Physics B
[]AP English Language
[]AP English Literature
[]AP Human Geography
[]AP U.S. Government and Politics
[li]AP Spanish (Does anyone have experience with taking this class after only a couple years of Spanish? I’m considering skipping ahead in order to take this.)[/li][/ul]

@tomboy: I think It will work out for us in the end. You should see some of the stats for the school I go to: we’ve sent nine kids to Columbia in the past two years and their average GPA was 3.54, 3 kids to MIT with an average GPA of 3.61, and 3 kids to Brown with an average GPA of 3.34 (including someone who had a sub - 3.0!), so I think that colleges know that my school is absurdly difficult. Hopefully we beat out those public noobs :).

My friend started Spanish in 2006 and ended it at the end of 2008. She says the AP Spanish exam is really easy. So, I think the AP Spanish class for you should be fine too.

Do you guys think colleges care if I take an easier class than I should? For example, I haven’t really been great at English but I’ve always taken Honors English every year, but next year I rather take GHP (Gifted, also non-weighted) English than AP mainly because I will be taking AP in everything else. This year I loaded up on a lot of AP courses and its just a pain in the ass trying to balance everything. So what do you guys think?

GHP English
AP Gov
AP Econ
AP Calc BC
Honors Physics
AP Spanish

OR instead of GHP English take AP?

Tentative Senior Year Schedule

AP Physics C
AP English Lit & Comp
AP Calc BC
AP Art History
AP Statistics
Latin III (School doesn’t offer AP Vergil)

Sort of wondering if I should’ve taken AP English Lang & Comp as a junior this year.

99% For Sure Classes:
AP Calc BC
AP Econ Micro/Macro
AP Gov
AP English Lit
AP Chem
Senior Leaders (P.E required in IL)
I can’t pick between AP Bio and AP Spanish 5 (for people who read my other post, I’ve now eliminated Physics because I don’t think engineering is right for me anymore)
Probable Major: Econ
Concentration: Pre-Med (maybe?)
