My school gives students the option of taking an off period in their senior year. I signed up for this with the intention of using the time to continue working a part-time job (15 hrs/week). Now I'm having second thoughts. Will "senior out" raise a red flag on my applications? (I'm looking at several elite schools--think HYP, Brown, Northwestern.) My senior year schedule still includes five APs. Thanks for the advice.

What was your junior year course load? Also, employment history will actually benefit you in the admissions process.
Edit: What class can you take for that off-period?

I took five APs this year and two sophomore year. (5s on all the tests except for a 4 on Spanish, if that counts for anything.) Is there a way to note on the common app that I’m using the off period to work?

just have your guidance counselor mention it in the rec.

I was actually wondering the same thing. I have an off block next year (as a senior) but my schedule includes 5 IB classes, one honors physics class, and a civics class (a requirement in order to graduate).

I was considering taking another class but my parents are kind of against it. They think I’ll be overworked or something. I would use the off block mainly for homework but because of my schedule, colleges wouldn’t see me as lazy right?

You are fine. The general rule of thumb of senior year is 4 APs+ for most competitive schools (however, rigor of AP depends on you school…). The difference between 5 APs and 6APs is minimal in the admissions process if you think about it. The fact that you are taking a part-time job as well completely eliminates any inch of laziness about you app.

That’s very reassuring. Thanks!
