I turned in a schedule for next year, but I’m thinking abt changing it…
I signed up for:
AP lit
AP gov
AP stat
AP bio
AP Chem
Ceramics 3/4
Draw Paint 1/2
My parents are encouraging me to change out draw paint for AP human geo. It’s a very easy, not well regarded AP, but it will boost my GPA ofc. My parents are concerned that if I don’t take it, I will fall from #2 to #3 in my class because the boy below me is taking 6 APs next year. Does class rank matter that much in admissions when it’s between 2nd and 3rd? Will I be able to earn more money for instance? Should I just focus more on college apps and only take 5 APs next year?
For reference, I’m taking 6 APs this year. I’m not sure what I want to major in. I think I would like architecture, but my parents only want me to go into medicine or engineering… I’m so bad at math though (not necessarily grade wise, but I struggle a lot in Calc and I just took the sat II math and thought it was awful), but I would be ok doing it if I was passionate about what I’m working on, which is what drew (ha) me to architecture. I’m just not sure about anything and it hurts when my parents don’t support me when I’ve finally found a passion for something (art)… I don’t know what to do…
Thanks for reading
Unless there is a specific scholarship for number 2 and not number 3, class rank does not matter so much as long as you are in the top 5%. Also, if you like art, architecture might be a good career choice. However, I believe you also need to be pretty decent at math for architecture as well, so that may be something to consider. And by the way, for medicine, engineering, and architecture, taking a senior year math class will likely be important, if for no other reason than you don’t forget some of what you’ve learned in between this year and college.
@Dax123 I am taking AP statistics next year, is that enough? And I know architecture requires a lot of math, but I’m alright doing it when it’s for something I enjoy, and hopefully architecture has a nice balance between art and math and science. I just don’t think I would like majoring specifically in math or engineering…
So I’m guessing it would be better to just take 5 APs next year?
Stats is mostly Algebra math. Calc is a big step up, and I wouldn’t recommend taking a year off if possible. If there is another Calc class offered at your school, I would take that. Otherwise, you could always just use Khan Academy to brush up on your Calc again before college starts, but again, I wouldn’t recommend that as much if a class is available.
I would say 5 APs is fine as long as you aren’t dropped out of the top 5%.
@Dax123 I love khan academy but I heard some recommend taking multi variable Calc at my community college? I just don’t know how I manage that time wise…? Bc my school doesn’t offer any math higher than Calc bc. Is it worth looking into? I’m worried that it will hurt my grades though, because I struggled a lot with Calc this year and I’m pretty sure I failed the AP exam last week…
If you struggled a lot with calc just take AP Stats and repeat calc in college if you need to. They’re not going to let you take Multivariable if you failed the AP test.
Can you possibly retake Calc? That would give you a really strong foundation going into college.
Ok. I plan on retaking Calc in college. Thanks
