Senior Showcases

Sue - So happy to hear about your sons performances and that you were able to go see them. Webster really is terrific (small tear rolls down my cheek, as I mention it!!!!)

Thesbo,

My classmate speaks really really highly of her old highschool -- I didn't know we were gonna be getting some more people from there, but that's awesome, I can't wait to meet them. If N. is in any way a representation of people from your school, you must be amazing! I think it's so funny that you know her; small world, right?

And Susan -- I'm so glad to hear World Goes Round is still in cabaret!! I thought I remembered hearing at one point that it had been replaced with "How Lucky You Are" from Seussical...but maybe I misunderstood, or maybe it's been reinstated, as so many songs are. It's such a staple of the "story", and I love the way it works in there. I like the kind of fluid nature of Cabaret, that certain songs go in and out but the kind of core of the show stays the same.

Thanks for letting me know!

I'm sort of considering coming up for the reunion -- a woman I work for is actually a stagedoor alum, and she just mentioned to me she might be renting a car and driving up...but...I also just bought myself tickets to the performance of Anyone Can Whistle at the Ravinia Festival in Illinois (with Audra MacDonald, Patti Lupone, and Michael Cerveris, happy 21st birthday to me!) and I think the dates may conflict. Or I may be getting confused.

But anyway, I'm hoping to make it, and if I do, maybe I'll see you there (though probably not, as we'll be among about eighty thousand other people).

How awesome for your daughter to get one final Stagedoor summer...and especially under these circumstances of her horrible past few months, it's even more symbolic, kind of a beacon of achievement and new possibility. I'm sure she'll be fantastic in Jeckyll and Hyde (it's a powerhouse vocal role, perfect for her) and it's fantastic that she got that Our Time solo...that means a lot. As does getting Carousels!! I know she's sung it before, but that's kind of the Biggest Honor possible to get that song. So I hope she has fun in her final star turn -- you're probably up there watching her right now, totally glowing with pride.

My best to both of you,
Anna

annabelera,

Funny you should mention Ravinia. My sister in law is a friend of Michael Cerveris and will be attending the concerts there. I just found this out this weekend as she won't be able to attend a family reunion event as a result. The concerts are Aug. 26 and 27. Enjoy! You'll have a great time, I'm sure. :)

Anna,
Just responding to your post though I am sorry it does not have to do with Senior Showcases! Also, if you find me online some time, we should chat.

To followup....in recent years, they did add the song, "How Lucky You Are" from Seussical to OTC. However, that song leads directly into World Goes Round. Saw OTC last night for my final time ;-( and it was really good. Jeff, in his opening remarks, said, he was dedicating the performance to kids who were performing for their last time and who had been in it for 8 years since they were only nine years old :D. I did feel teary eyed when she started singing Our Time....kinda like a graduation of sorts. Jekyll and Hyde was one of the best productions I had seen at SDM, though I have seen many excellent ones over the years...this one was in the handful of the top. Also lots of kids who did not come back this year, came back for it and the crowd was really something last night. And yes, it was quite the role and show to go out with. I mean to be the final one at camp. It was also a "return" to the stage for my D following her recovery and so in that way, it was all that much more meaningful. Believe it or not, she was doing a kick line.

You mentioned the anniversary/reunion. GO! It is on July 24 at 3 PM at Kutschers. They expect 1500. Actually the current OTC is gonna sing World Goes Round, what a coincidence. After the shindig at Kutschers (performances, video, etc.) there is a party back at camp. My D said that all previous OTC members from the past 30 years will gather in The Playhouse to sing the songs together. And there will be a showing of the documentary, Stagedoor, for alums. My daughter says, well, now I am a high school graduate and an alum of SDM (not sure which means more!). Hope to see you there. There will be many from your years attending. In fact, this past weekend, one boy from your "generation" was at camp seeing the shows....BL from Texas, blond, used to do Give My Regards To Broadway in OTC.

Fullerton usually does a senior & grad (combined) showcase in Los Angeles each year. However, with numerous retirements, and job searches for replacements as well as NEW positions (yes!!!), the showcase was neglected last year. The faculty strongly feels that we need to revive the showcase this year - and is putting our energy and focus to this topic. But with our new performing arts building opening in January (along with the weekend gala celebration and the physical move into the new building), it may be too ambitious to expect this May... Just being realistic here.
