So for my Senior year, I want to participate in the High School College Program offered by a near by community college. I would have to pay and that's fine, but I think I would have to do half days at my high school to make the classes at the cc. If I do this, I won't be able to do sports. I'm not betting on getting an athletic scholarship or anything, but I was co-captain for Volleyball this past year and will probably be captain again next year. And I don't even know if I would be able to stay after at all for anything. (I'm not sure about this part, I just know the sports thing because my friend tried to do half days and play sports.)

What should I do? I love playing volleyball, but I'm tired of my high school's classes. The only classes that are going to highlight my senior year are AP Government and Calc BC and a mandatory science (physics, ecology, or bio II [anatomy. The rest will be elective probably because I've pretty much exhausted my English options (except the electives in which we do pretty much nothing). I can stay and just try to talk my guidance counselor into letting me take online classes (where if I take Spanish, I'll learn some Spanish rather than do crossword puzzles), but it's a long shot.

So any advice? Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks, guys :)

Talk to the principal and the athletic director before you make any decisions. You shouldn’t have to choose between furthering your education and an extra-curricular activity in which you clearly excel (at my school being captain of any sport as a junior is super rare).

This is your last year to play volleyball, but you will be taking classes that you are interested in for the next four years.

I’m a little confused though–is the issue that you wouldn’t be back at your high school for practices/games or that because you would only be in class for the half the day you are violating some athletic rules?

Do whatever you’d like to do. I would personally choose the classes, but I’m not into athletics so don’t take my opinion. But mreg123 is right: you are choosing classes that may help you for the future, and you’d enjoy, or an extracurricular you probably won’t continue in college. The choice, as they say is yours.

I’d say you should tread carefully, unless you want this snafu to escalate into a brouhaha.

@mreg123, there is this rule at my school that if you don’t have a full day schedule, you’re not allowed to play sports. It goes along with GPA requirements and such.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I will be talking to my coach and counselor more especially since they’ll be making schedules after break (tomorrow). I just want to really think this through to avoid silly blunders that cause my last year to be less than enjoyable.
