Well, the ever looming senior thesis is rearing its ugly head right around the corner and I honestly have no idea where to start looking. I don't know if other high schools do this, but basically, all seniors choose a novel or play (no poems so Dante's Divine Comedy is out :() and write a 10-12 page paper on the novel. The only requirements are that it must be a novel or a play and it must have "literary merit."

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of books that are particularly interesting. I kind of want to read something that I have never read before, but I have no idea where to start looking. So it'll be great if you guys can help me out! :)

I've been thinking of these books, but they are all ones that I have already read though and enjoyed the most: Lord of the Flies by William Golding, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (maybe I'll explore other of his works since I LOVE his writing style), and Dr. Faustus by Christopher Marlowe. Any others? THANKS!

Chaucer's Canterbury Tales?
The Awakening?
The Catcher in the Rye?
Brave New World?
The Leatherstocking Tales (ARGH)?
Gone With the Wind?
The Red Badge of Courage?
Moby Dick (LOL.)?
1984 (ORWELL!)?
Anything by Steinbeck, Kafka, Hemingway, Twain, etc?

BTW, if you liked Fitzgerald's style, read This Side of Paradise.

Sorry that they're in no particular order - just listing off the top of my head. I'm sure that you can find a much better list online somewhere.

I actually did read This Side of Paradise, and I really enjoyed it and I have considered analyzing this text alongside with The Great Gatsby. I will definately take a look at your list.

This Side of Paradise is one of my favorite novels. I consider "The Sun Also Rises" by Hemmingway to have the same tone. You should also look at "100 Years of Solitude" or "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man."

Perhaps, given that you seem to have an interest in the Divine Comedy, you could try Milton's "Paradise Lost"? The writing style couldn't be any further from Dante's, but its an excellent book.

Unfortunately, Paradise Lost is a poem and does not qualify. I read it all the way back in the summer before freshman year and I loved it, and it was just a few days ago, when my dreams for writing my senior thesis on it was destroyed. tear

Thank you everyone else for the suggestions!

I really liked A Farewell to Arms by Hemingway. Another suggestion is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest or Jane Eyre (I didn't love Jane Eyre but it's a good book to write about). We've just started reading The Plague and I really like it. But you seem to really love Fitzgerald so I think you should write about one of his novels.

I really recommend Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (which i wrote about :)). It is an excellent book with plenty of stuff to do literary analysis on.
