Hello everyone,
my guidance counselor handed out our course selection sheets today, and I am extremely confused! I have 7 spots for classes, but as of right now I have 2 space filled for an animal science program I am in. I also still need to take Health 10 (yuck), which is a half year course. So for the other half i was either thinking forensic science or another elective like law or business of some sort.
This year I am taking regular precalc cause im terrible at math (never got above a C for the past 2 math classes). Its not cause I don’t try, its just because im not good at it. So I dont know what math class I want to take.
I could take AP stats, regular calc, honors calc, or AP Calculus AB. I thought i knew for sure that i wanted to major in vet medicine, but I am not totally sure. I will probably stay in the science field, unless i decide to go into business.
Also, for science, i defintely want to take human physiology, and maybe another science. I was thinking of taking physics outside of school so it wont kill my gpa. I would really love to fit a study hall, TA position or independent study in there but I know that it isnt always possible.
So right now my schedule for next year is:
AP English Lit
Animal Repro
Agribusiness/ECE animal behavior (whichever i get accepted into)
AP stats/or calc
Health & forensic science
Human Anat & Phys
Study hall/indep study/TA or some other class
this is my senior year, so i need to fulfill requirements and such but also not sacrifice my GPA, which is already pretty low (for a good reason, my mom passed away freshman year…and i suck at math lol)
You’re schedule looks pretty good, however it’s imperative to become good at math, whether you like it or not. Take regular Calc especially if your grade is a C in a regular Precalculus class. Does your school have any other requirements you need for graduation?
I’m studying for math like crazy, it doesn’t click in my brain like conceptual things do but I’m really working at it. They have a few requirements but the only one I haven’t filled is a second semester of health.
A student who struggles to get a C in regular precalculus is likely not ready to take calculus, unless “regular calculus” is what other schools may call Analysis ie , precalculus review with some calculus (derivatives, limits). @bjkmom is a math teacher and may have a better perspective.
Look at your flagships’ college of agriculture and its majors. Select different ones (not just animal science but also technical majors and agribusiness- a VERY profitable major btw) and check out what their first year courses include a some majors may require a form of applied calculus, in which case you’re better off trying to take regular calculus in high school as a slower preview of that college course. If not, take AP statistics or plain statistics.
Replace A&P with a social science (history, financial literacy& economics, etc).
Depending on whether you might take agribusiness, see if your last slot could be for DECA or a business class.
Look at what pre-vet requirements are for college classes in math. It appears to me that Statistics is one of those classes. So take AP Stats to prepare yourself.
Make sure you have taken Bio, CHem and Physics. I would suggest an AP version of those as well. I would take Physics. I assure you that the pre-vet students you are competing against will be taking advanced sciences.
