Hello All! I am in need of help deciding on my senior year schedule, and mind you this is my first time posting, so I hope I posted on the right form.
Technically I only need two classes to graduate from my state: art elective and gov/econ elective.
I must take at least 4 classes as a senior to graduate from my school.
Yet I can’t seem to cut down classes.
My possibilities are:
AP Stats (taking calc ap this year and hate so I’m not taking bc)
AP Lit
gov/econ honors
anatomy honors (taking ap bio this year, apes teacher is impossible, and the anatomy teacher is rough, but I feel as I will take a lot away from her class)
Health science 2 (taking health science 1 to be first aid certified; health science 2 would be cpr certified)
Spanish (this is undecided. I am taking Ap Spanish Lang this year and they are trying to make a Ap spanish lit class but don’t have a certified teacher, otherwise they will call it spanish 5 honors and we can decide if we want to take the ap exam or have an easier spanish class. want to major (double major actually) in spanish (and biology) so I would like to take some form of spanish
AP seminar is being offered for the first time ever at my school and it seems really cool.
We only have 7 class periods so I would have to take my art elective online. I could either take AP art history online over the school year and have 8 classes (which I have never done) or I could take music appreciation cp over the summer.
Almost no-one has a full workload at my school senior year so I was thinking about taking gov/econ, and art over the summer. This way I have 6 classes (possibly 5 if spanish or seminar don’t workout)
I just need a fresh perspective. I am taking four aps this year and if it weren’t for calc it would be fine, but I need to have time for college apps, and college tours.
Well, at least some of your decision might depend on what your expected college path is. For example, if you are a STEM kid, then I would drop AP Lit - especially if you have taken AP Language and scored a 5 on the test. AP Lit has a lot of reading, and some schools will not give college credit for both AP Lit and AP Lang - but only one of them.
In our area HSs, CAD Design counts as art - that’s a nice way to go which can be helpful in college - and it is not an AP course, so that will lighten your workload. For music appreciation? - download some new tunes and call it a day…
@nugraddad I am more of a STEM kid, but do well in the english classes (not history). My ap lang teacher said that a lot of kids didn’t get into their choice of college because they didn’t take english all four years of high school, and you don’t want to skip taking English for a year. This year I am on track to get a four on ap lang so maybe I can get a 5 next year.
We don’t have CAD Design, that sounds cool though!
Thanks!
Take music appreciation over the summer, it’s a fun class with all kinds of uses including changing the way you look at things and flirting, cf.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63CzbeGzSCo
Next, having six periods during senior year should be plenty.
Make sure you take Spanish (you don’t want to get rusty if you want to minor/major, especially since your ability to major easily will depend on how high you score on your placement test); English (you do need 4 years for college, but Honors English is fine, or AP Lit if you love to read); Math (AP Stats should be ok); a science of your choice (you must make sure you’ve taken all three from bio, chem, physics, at any level); Gov/Econ honors for your social science; and finally, either Health 2 or AP Seminar, with one being much more rigorous than the other presumably.
I think that’s what I’ll do @MYOS1634 ! And taking one class over the summer shouldn’t be too bad. I’m gonna try and take spanish regardless if they end up making it ap or not. I honestly would prefer AP lit because I love the teacher (even though she assigns a lot of homework). I took bio honors freshman year and physics honors and chem honors sophomore year and I’m taking ap bio and micro honors this year. So thanks!
I was just worried that 6 classes senior year is going to be too many. I know that I can handle it, but my sat/act scores suck and I need to focus on common apps, but hopefully it will be doable
Prep now, retake in the Spring and in June, take subject tests in May, if necessary retake in the Fall whatever needs to be taken. Try both SAT and ACT (use practice tests to decide which one is best for you.)
@georgie21 - I am not advocating dropping English Senior year! - but my son was in a similar position as you going into his Senior year. He scored a 5 on the AP Language test after his Jr year, so he took a regular level writing course for English his senior year. BTW - tell your English teacher that NU was his ED choice and he got in just fine without the AP English Lit. And if you can’t take a computer design course, I agree 100% with @mommdc - take something fun for art - & enjoy your senior year!
