I am a rising senior and this summer I finally realized what major I wanted to pursue. This is computer science. I have been coding and building different web applications for a few years now but I always thought I wanted to be an engineering major. I never did any extra curricular activities related to computer science or engineering. I only played football and have a job. I feel like that is not enough. I wanted to volunteer my time to make websites for churches. This would allow me to rack up volunteer hours in something related to my major. However I feel like this might be too late because it is the summer before senior year and would look bad on my application.
I’ve hear it said that it is never to late to do the right time and I would add never to late to do a good thing. Go ahead a begin volunteering. If asked, you can explain as you did above: as you were able to better focus your desired major, this application for your skills came to mind.
I have yet to met a person who always knew what they wanted to do. Finding a passion takes time. Admissions counselors understand this. It’s not too late to start doing what you love. It also makes for a good narrative.
Your job is your major EC. They know you are working to gain money for paying part of your school expenses. Football (varsity?) is a tough EC and if you can balance that with a strong application it should look good.
If you want to volunteer to make websites for churches and have time to do so then by all means go ahead. But don’t do something just because you think it would look good on a college application.
