So I'm in my junior year and I've done near to none on extracurricular activities and volunteering. Is it too late to start now because I feel like I won't really appeal to colleges like UCs because I'm starting late. I've spent most of my afterschool time on MESA and robotics during my sophomore year and studying for school and SATs. I haven't done any EC during my freshman year because I was a bit rebellious and had little care about school. If I start any EC or volunteering, what should I do to really appeal myself to good colleges?

Hmm. Do you know what you would like to study at this point? You still have months to get started on something. For example, let’s say you want to study engineering. You should devote more time to robotics or join a club that has to do with engineering and really. If the passion and commitment are evident, you will be fine.

Do what you enjoy! It’s not too late! Try to get a leadership position if you can because that will really stand out!

Thank you so much for the helpful advices! Should I do any volunteering and if I should is there a particular type of volunteering that I should try?

If you don’t like it, you probably can’t write about it in your essay
If it isn’t near enough to you, perhaps you won’t be able to go enough and it won’t be practical
If the hours don’t match, it isn’t going to help much
Try some - see what you can be passionate about, don’t be afraid to try more than one but not at the expense of your grades or sleep (needed for all the nasty standardized tests)

And don’t necessarily give up on robotics, even though it is common it is not a bad activity to do for aspiring STEM majors.
