Senioritis

How much “letting go” second semester senior year will get you rescinded from a school like Harvard? Is going from high A’s to B’s enough? Or is dropping an Honors class for an off period enough? Just wandering.

You can’t drop or change classes without notifying all colleges to which you have been accepted or have decisions pending. They expect the classes on the final transcript at the end of the year to match what was sent at the beginning or mid-year. “Bait & switch” is highly frowned upon.

As for grades, a drop from A’s to B’s or C’s in a known-to-be-difficult class or two is highly likely to be forgiven. D’s, F’s, and felonies have been justifications to rescind acceptance offers. Anything in between carries variable levels of risk, depending on the selectivity of the college and the length of their waitlist.

As for Harvard: don’t even think about messing around if you’ve been fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to put in a tuition deposit at any selective school with 1,000+ kids on the waitlist.

Bottom line: Senioritis can have consequences. Play at your own risk.

My theory and many known schools theories are… You are now getting ready for college. This is the next phase. If you got into Harvard then you are a good student. Why change that? Sure don’t do all nighters but what do you think you’ll gain? My son had the same question of letting loose. Great one weekend of doing nothing and having fun but when school came around he was back to studying for his classes. College is much harder then high school. Prepare for it. Most schools start to lessen things for seniors around March. Your almost there. You also have all summer to unwind. Trust me you will be bored after a week… Lol.

OP, serious question: are you purposely trying to get your Harvard offer rescinded? (You said in another thread you’d felt pressured into applying and you didn’t want to go.) seems like you’re trying to figure out how to do enough to get you dropped from Harvard without jeopardizing other schools… or am I over-analyzing?

Keep to A’s and B’s. If you are not someone who wants to keep up with academics, then Harvard may not be for you.

definitely over analyzing. I gave it some thought and did some more research, and I can’t think of a better place to study Liberal Arts. I just needed some time to think things through. I am really trying to NOT get rescinded, I’d be crushed.

You got into Harvard? Do you think you aren’t good enough? My understanding is that a school like Harvard won’t hesitate to rescind for C’s. I know that other schools have done so. Why admit a slacker when your yield is 85% or whatever?

Here’s what you should think through: you might well feel inadequate surrounded by all the “greatness” at Harvard. There are plenty of students who think they are hotshots at their high school, get into a place like Harvard, and feel as though they are a fraud and don’t belong there. You wouldn’t have been admitted if they didn’t think you could handle it. However, don’t prove them wrong. If you really want to attend Harvard, you keep doing whatever it is you’ve been doing. On the other hand, if you were just seeing if you could get in, and now that you have, you are having doubts, then feel free to slack a little. You’re obviously a strong candidate and will probably have good choices.
