September ACT Essay Discussion

[QUOTE=EdenW]
I usually struggle with writing a lot during such a short period of time (30 minutes…really?) but since I heard that ACT rewards longer essays, I made sure to have enough to say. Surprisingly I was able to make 5 paragraphs, and i think i filled about 2 and a quarter pages, I have tiny handwriting…hopefully they’ll be able to read it!

Do they reward using extremely specific examples? Most of mine were more on the vague side…I’d predict I got a 9/10 which is up from my last time!

As with the SATs, they reward specific examples. For example, instead of saying “that my teacher said”, it’d be better to specify "that my English teacher, Mrs. Dobson, said. The writing score is out of 12. Both SATs and the ACTs reward longer essays, so make your handwriting bigger, the spaces larger, and have fewer words per line. 2.5 pages is pretty good, 3 pages is very good, 3.5 pages is definitely in the clear; I’ve never heard of a full 4 pages (I got 3.5 and started writing literally within the first 15 seconds).

I had the class participation topic too, and I did it badly. When I was doing the brainstorming, I couldn’t think about anything. The worst part which I did in the test, The Hell Essay.

is the essay score factored into your english score? or is it a seperate mark

I think it’s a separate mark, and they care about your writing. Ughhhhh, my writing sucks.

Hello September ACTers! It seems that you had a hard essay topic. But may I know what the essay topic was? (By the way, I’m a prospective ACTer)

about whether or not participation in class discussions/debates should be included in your grade or whether it should be only tests/papers

I managed to scribble out four rough (and extremely messy) paragraphs. The basis of my argument was that students develop collaboration skills through other activities, and don’t really need to practice these skills academically.

Question: In one part, to save time, I didn’t want to erase and just added an insert character “^” below the text I added. Could I be counted off for that?

Dude this thread is from 09…

So, what if time ran out and I still had 3 words left to write? I was just restating in my conclusion something I had said earlier. Will 3 unwritten words bring down my score much?

I think with mine I did (even though this is from 09):

 1. Paragraph 1- Agreeing with the prompt about participation
 2. Paragraph 2- It helps elaborate thinking process. You’re going to be working in groups all your life and with work. It helps you become open-minded and elaborate on other people’s opinions on certain answers/subjects.
 3. Paragraph 3- Aids adolescent teens to become more socially active. You can speak your mind and how you found the answer. Most classes teach you that you need to find the answer, when really it should be about searching for the answer. The way you search for the answer is by working in groups and when you do so, you become more socially active. You know how to communicate with your peers more often and that is what you’ll need as an adult.
 4. Paragraph 4- I kind of forgot what I said… Haha but I know I talked about intellectuals and I brought up a certain book and explained my reasonings through literature.
 5. Paragraph 5- Closure. Stated my points.

I think I did well… Not really sure.

Yeah. I dont even know what I did. I began my essay with vivid description (and personification) of a wolf pack to make my essay interesting…but I kinda elaborated on it too much…so I ended up with a page and a half introduction, a weak thesis, one example, and no conclusion. Thus, I fail big time.

^I had one example last time; i got an 11.

But w/o a conclusion, you can’t get more than an 8

Really? I got like a 9 last time without a conclusion o-o And it was a pretty lame essay too >->
Hopefully I don’t do too bad…=3=

^really? a 9? wow. Something must’ve stuck out.

It wasn’t my favorite essay topic…but i still managed a good 5 paragraphs and almost 4 pages:
I was against group work in school
I cited:
One hundred years of Solitude
The Scarlet Letter
Voltaire’s Candide
and as a counter argument the success of Japan and its group based culture
I hope i get a 12 again…I’m going to need it since the math section killed me :/
