However not any real olympiads and you know what i mean by REAL

LORs- I come from a small place my school principle is like my best friend so he will help me in every way
No Probs

HERES THE WHOLE DEAL

MONEY MONEY MONEY

SEriously buddies ......... CAnnot pay cannot pay

NEED 80-85 % Aid

My school Principle SAys He could get 9 organisations (Indian) who could get me money or loans (he studied from australia himself)

But real question is that you get the money from any organisation after you get 'INnto college ' but then again you should have money before getting "into college " so i could not understand

I just want to know, That

do guys with less money should even consider applying???

I have no problem with IIT
I know i could get PHysics my favourite subject at IIT DElhi my favourite Indian Place

But then Again i dont want to waste the ton of hours i invested here ..
And lose the dream i had since 3 years .......
Dont inspire me with the special case of some multiple olympiad medallist

Or the Adversities of some Impoversihed youngster from kolkata

and dont depress me either with the 2400 sat scorer who got rejected from 2400 universities
Because he was indian and lacked money

Just tell the truth

Or tell me a university for

HARDWORKING POOR GUYS

Hey I think i could pay for college if i get accepted because some organisations might help me and besides my uncle(yeah real one ) Is a bank manager so he could get me loans too … but reall thing is getting INNN

Best of Luck bro. Try UIUC. You will get in there for sure.

I know a lot of people who need money but are still applying to US.

The thing is, ivies would give you as much money as you want and it will not have any bearing on your admission. So if your stats are good enough for an Ivy or any similar top institution, you shouldn’t worry about me.

My advice would be, that if you come from a small school (I am assuming less renowned) You should try to get more ECs from external and more credited sources.

Even i have a similar situation regarding ECs! I got
CGPA 9.6 in 9th
10 in 10th
and have a few general olympiad certificates/medal

I dont have anything to add to my EC except my blog which i might start!

little worried on my ECs since i am not into sports and dont have much time nw due to IIT studies

@ the OP - You seriously need to research!! And by research I mean a LOT OF IT!! :)

Firstly, garggaurav is mistaken - not all ivies are need blind! Only half of them are!!
And there are probably 8 schools in U.S.A. which are need blind for Intn’ls!!

Secondly - if you can get aid from external organizations, it doesn’t matter when you get it. During admission you have state these “external” sources and prove that you have the funding!!

Codeguy says try UIUC - you’ll get in! But there is no financial aid!!
And I don’t where this myth has come from that you need to be an olympiad medallist to get admission!! That holds good only for NUS/NTU!!

What the U.S. universities want to see is dedication and passion!! :)

And some good choices for you would be Northwestern, Cornell, Vanderbilt. Note that I only listed universities with financial aid!! The other ivies - it depends on your final app stats!!

And a word of caution - don’t go by Mock SAT tests!! Heck, I scored a 2250+ on all 10 of CollegeBoard’s 10 practice tests and ended up with a 2230 superscore after two tries (2180 & 2130)!! Also RESEARCH!! Its the only way to get answers. For the last half year, since I realized that USA was an option - I have spent atleast 5 hrs a week researcing on the various universities!! :)

Thanks Rishav17, it was very helpful! So you got accepted anywhere or waiting for results?

Waiting for decisions!!
I made a big mistake by not applying ED/EA anywhere!!

@Rocketmantrace - Nice verbose post. But I’ll be frank - you are asking the wrong question; you should rephrase it to “I WILL get in; which schools should I look at for what I want to study?”

That being said, looking at what you’ve posted, you’re a pretty strong candidate for lots of good schools. You should think hard about what your career goals are, and then base your University/College decisions based on that.

As for your Money question - that all depends on how you present yourself to the admissions and Financial Aid boards of the various schools you apply to. If you have a good, genuine, convincing story then you have a very fair shot at getting a good aid package. On the other hand, if you write a bad financial need statement, then you get the point. . .

Pick a handful of good schools that are conducive to what you want to become when you’re done with College, apply, get in, and then go after the funding. It’s not a trivial process - but that’s the general overview of the steps. It’s the details that you need to pay lots of attention to.

Good luck.

^ haha!! That is so not true for universities in the USA - for undergraduate studies!!
Your financial aid is determined by your income from various sources and your expenditure as you show it on the CSS or the Universitiy’s own FinAid portal. You DO NOT need a statement for financial need, especially with a SOB STORY!!
I do not have a Phd, but I know ^ this is true!!

@The OP - And to be fair with you, you need to work hard in 12th to get into the ivies or the likes of it!! Still you are in a good enough position.

Also, if you decide to apply, get in and then “GO AFTER” aid - then be extremely sure that you have guaranteed funding from external sources. However with you needing 80-85% aid - It is a totally different ball game!! :/

If your real objective is to JUST study in the U.S.A. at a reputed university - I’d say apply to some of the lower ranked colleges(Still better than anything in India except the IITs) so that you have a good chance of getting aid!! :)

@Rishav17 - agreed, aid is determined by overall need, but a lot of universities do allow you to include a personal statement. Particularly top-tier privates.

Your last statement is interesting. I would agree that if the end-goal is to get a U.S. degree, then the applicant should expand the aperture to look at top-25 or maybe even top-50. That gives a lot of choices. Would focus on schools with large endowments that have more leeway in Fin Aid.
