Serious Dilema Bio-Med

Here is my ordeal... I am a senior, already admitted...

I rushed the application process ridiculously when it was my time to apply, I have dwindled everything down to 4 schools...

UCSD... Carnegie Mellon... Rutger New Brunswick... and Drexel University...

My major is Biomedical engineering, specifically tissue engineering when i get farther in my education. I am pretty confident in my desire to be a bioengineer...

I know i know i know that UCSD is the best program academically for BioE... but I fear not being able to afford it since i am an out of state student in NJ, and california schools really dont treat out of staters all that well... PLUS... I am in the BioE: Pre med major, not the BioE: Biotech major at UCSD... (This is what "rushing" my applications did, I applied for pre med top choice cuz i thought it sounded good... big mistake.)

I visited Rutgers today and loved the campus life, and its cheap, and not half bad academically, but is it recognized by graduate schools? (specifically berkeley when it comes time for grad school)

I dont want to make a "cheap" decision now that I will regrette in 4 years...

Does anyone know if i can switch into BioE: Biotech at UCSD... tehy told me over the phone no... but if ur an amazing student???

blarghh... stressful
Thanks a lot for any help...

From my experience at UCSD: No.

Because BioE is impacted, almost no students can switch into the major. It is "possible" for amazing students, but dependent on some qualifications you lack.

What specifically do you think one would need to do? And what do you think I lack? Just curious...

I'm replying to myself, which is probably bad message board tact, but anyway...

when i called UCSD, the women in the BioE department said that switching into the BioE: Biotech is not allowed, and that students can only be admitted from High School, but on their website I found information saying that transfer students can be admitted?

http://admissions.ucsd.edu/dev3/info/um.html#impactpre (scroll down to the bottom and look for "transfer applicants" in bold)

Would they put a transfer student who wants to get into BioE: Biotech over a student already at UCSD who wants to switch majors to BioE: Biotech... especially when that student is already a BioE: Pre-med student? I have also checked out the curriculum and switching wouldn't be critical until junior year, because from what i can gather, the curriculum is almost identical in both BioE pre med and BioE Biotech up until junior year. This gives me time to build up a strong basis not only for the academics of my major switch, but also to back up my argument...

Thanks again all
