Hello!

I am a rising sophomore in college, and I am at a crossroads when it comes to my major, and i dont want to continue in my original major(history ed). I have serious reservations about teaching because of the crappy pay, long hours, and the lack of respect they get. I enjoy working with other people, and I am strong at history and english, not math and science. I want a career that will pay well, allowing me to support a family, and a field im employable in. I am from the DC area so I have ins with the government jobs(father works there) so i was thinking about polysci, any hints or help would be great!

I think you should probably stay with your history degree because that is a very respectable degree to get a government job. Even if you plan to attend a law school a history degree definitely works.
Even if you aren’t going to be an educator, poli sci doesn’t carry much more weight than a history major in government jobs. Outside of the government and education fields, history doesn’t really have that many opportunities though.

I am a polisci major and I can tell you that any job you would want in politics or government you can easily get with a history degree. The thing with polisci, or history or anything like that is that the degree is just paper. You need either a masters, connections or internships to get you to the place you want to go. I suggest you look into internships into the career field you want because it can get you extremely valuable experience.

i would just change to a history major and maybe pick up a poli sci minor, if possible.

You should only go in to teaching if you have a passion for education. Nobody goes into it for the pay, plus the market for history/humanities teachers is already saturated.

Idk what you should do, but don’t get your hopes up for a high salary with a history degree unless you find a direction or get a relevant internship/research position.
