Set on Tech!!!

Hi, it's Majord. I have my eyes set on Tech and they have not gone dry yet, and probably never will!!!! I really want to attend Tech but I'm still a high school juinor so I wanted to know more a bout Tech while I can.

I am an African American female from Southeast GA, ranked 1 in about 400, 4.0 UW GPA, 4.125 W, 8 APs upon graduation. (interested in PSP)

Firstly, I am interested in majoring in Biochem and Public Policy because I really want to go into Public Health then one day Govt, and I know both of those schools are very good and they offer what I want. However if I want to go into public health, which option for Biochem would be more suitable: Research or Internationl Plan?

Also, I am set on the BS/MS Program for Public Policy, and I know that the two programs(Biochem and Public Policy) might be a load, but I am aware that I can do internships and study abroad.

I understand that a regular course load at Tech is 5 classes a semester, but are 6 or 7 classes really a load when it comes to being socially involved? Also, into consideration, I will probably be involved in 3 clubs at the most along with Track.

you’re gpa looks great, and 8 ap’s sounds about solid. hows your SAT?

if your at least 2100+, i’d say in for sure, very good chance of PSP if you’re EC’s are moderately good.

Thelast time Ihave taken the SAT was 9th grade and I scored a 1570. But I will take the ACT nextmoth. I had a practice simluationof an actual ACT test as a mandatory honors requirement and scored a 31 on English and a 29 on Math. Also, at the tim eof thepractice, Ihad not had Math for ayear, the last math I took before thepraactice was Algebra 2, so now I am in Trig and a Calculus based Chemistry at Wayocrss College, whch will hopefully improve my m,ath score.

In terms of ECs. I am involved in NHS, Beta, MUN, Alpha Delta Science club, HOSA, Junior Advisorycouncil, and FCA. I am President fof Hosa, JAC, NHS, BETA, and the Ice Breaker Leader for FCA. In the tenth grade, I was Vice Preseident of HOSA and Community Service Orgainzer of NHS and BETA. I have also attenede the Nationala youth Leadership forum on Medicine at Emory University, and competed in the porogram’s national public health competiton, receing Honorable Mention (3rds place). This year I am fdoing a publihc health porject for the H1N1 flu epidemic for the Young epidemiologist Compettion.

Is that SAT including writing? If its a 1570 out of 2400 you have some work to do. I don’t think you can even get admitted with those stats. I’d say 2000 is a minimum, though G.P. Burdell is probably your best resource for exact requirements. However, if it is out of 1600, you have a great chance. You should think about applying to schools like MIT, Emory, Johns Hopkins, or other great Bio-chem/biology/chemistry schools. Georgia Tech is a great school, and I guess your set on the BS/MS program, but make sure you consider other schools as well–especially if your looking for the bio-chem aspect.

Your EC’s look good by glancing. NYLF is pretty bs (don’t want to come off as mean/rude, just being honest). It seems that your EC’s are spread among several interests. And that’s fine, its good to be diverse, but it seems like you’re doing all these for the sake of doing them. Maybe your high school is different than mine, not sure, but I find it hard to be committed to more than 3 clubs.

Things that stand out, in my opinion, are:
-Science Club - What competitions do you compete in within the club? Did you win anything?
-MUN - How well do you do? Is this a real interest?
-What do you mean by public health project?

All in all, if you’re SAT is a 2000+ I’d say you’ll be admitted given the rigor of your high school schedule (8 AP’s). If you push a 2150+ SAT, you will be in good contention for PSP given a strong EC background. I’m not going to lie, the fact that you’re a female doesn’t hurt. If you plan on applying PSP, I suggest you elaborate on a few meaningful EC’s, rather than all those you listed. If you realize you haven’t focused on any given one, maybe try to do that between now and the time you apply (next year, I’m guessing).

Just so you know, this advice really can be applied to any school. Make sure you indicate to colleges that you’re intent on learning something and you have a goal, rather than just making your application look nice from a glance.

im sure she would do better then a 1570/2400 now, since that was only her freshman year, most likely before algebra 2 and trig.

yeah that’s probably an accurate assessment. i would say minimum 30+ on the ACT she’ll take next month for admission, 32-33+ for PSP contention.

Honestly, thank you all for your wisdom. I will certainly work on molding my interests and see what other nice schools have to offer as well. Also, please excuse the spelling mistakes; I was in a rush during homeroom. But, yeah, hopefully my ACT score will be aroung a 30 or 32. MUN is a strong passion of mine. For my school’s team I work on the World Health Organization because I do want to go into public health and maybe one day work at either the CDC or the WHO. And by public health projects, the first one I have done was an awareness project about HIV/AIDS. The one I am doing now is actually about the epidemiology of the H1N1 flu. And I totally agree that NYLF was not what it claims to be in the Packets!!! The only thing that i truly got out of it was a great public health seminar from Mr. Dave Butler and an internship offer from an Indian gynecologist in ATL who uses robots to deliver babies.
