Ok at the start of fall quarter 2006 i did a pretty crummy job of setting up my computer for internet access. Basically I couldn't figure out how to set up wireless, i tried the login screen it doesnt work. it will log in and go right back to the log in screen. so i have been left with my ethernet port and wire and a dodgy internet connection throughout my time here so far. meaning the connection turns off and on. basically im ****ed off and i need a little help setting up wireless so i can use it wirelessly in my room and across campus. thanks for any help you can provide.

this is not going to help probably, but i dont live on campus, i use a belkin wireless card, and whenver i am on campus, i just have to go to where there is a hotspot or somwehre near it, and it picsk up the connection, then i log on with my id and thats it......... so i assume being as that you are on campus, couldnt you just use a wireless card instead of trying to connect it to an adaptor and stuff?

Also, did you do this thing where you get some sort of certificate from UCLA, i vaguely remeber but you had to set it up so that you can access all that ucla stuff.

Its somewhere on the ucla IT website, that i have no idea how to get to as of right now.

you have to go to STC and register your router. before you do this, plug your laptop into the lan and register via resnet. After you go to STC with your router and get it registered, set it up and I think you are good to go.

when you say router do u mean wireless card. thanks by the way bruinboy and malishika. oh yeah there is no resnetreg page unless im missing something. when i go to stc site and click resnetreg it takes me to a page but there is no link to actually register.

there are two things needed to have a wireless connection: a router which is hooked up to the hardwired LAN, and a wifi enabled device (ie laptop with wireless card).

i believe dorms do not have wireless except maybe in the lounges of come buildings. if you want to use wireless in your room, you most likely need to set up your own wireless router in your room.

if you are in an area with wireless internet available, you just make sure your wireless is turned on, and then view available wireless networks, select UCLAWLAN. then open a browser window after the connection is established (if firefox doesnt work use IE). at the authentication page, log in using your BOL id and pass, and you should be online.

but the wired connection should be more stable than wireless. maybe your cable or the wall jack is damaged?

when i said "go to STC" i mean physically take your stuff to the STC building. btw, im assuming you have internet right now (using CC), so im pretty sure you've already registered. If not, there may be a problem with your laptop so take it to STC as well.

wireless is spotty but definitely available - i know a couple of guys in c4 who haven't used an ethernet or a router since tehy got here and they use torrents etc.

I don't live on campus, but everytime I'm in class in Bunche or Public Policy, my wireless detects the UCLA wireless and it's a "Excellent" connection, but nothing happens. Before, it used to take me to the page to sign on...but now, it's as if I don't have internet...unless I can find an unsecured wireless network and get spotty connection. Anyone know how I can fix this? I recently installed Norton Corporate version and if I can recall, that's when this started happening.

uninstall norton. :p

Norton Internet Security blocks Internet access by default, I believe.
